Ive been looking at a property on Railway St, just opposite the pub in its own courtyard, you wouldn't know it was there. I remember there was a taxi rank opposite the carpet shop and halfords, which bothers me but also , being in the centre of town, well would you ? We are a family of 4, me , Mrs and two kids under 10. What say you wise and handsome people ?

If this is the property I am thinking of on the corner of Railway Street and Bircherley Green it has no parking space, nor any allocated parking space, not any likelihood of parking space; only a small concession for a brief period of time (if it can be renegotiated). If you don't have a car, no problem. On the other hand bollards will shortly be going in at this junction which will help make the area bit more pedestrian friendly.

I know it well. It's a great property, beautifully re-furbished by a meticulous company. It is, however not easy to sell and won't ever be. The lack of parking is the obvious de-valuer, but there are also issues of shared areas with shops, which have lead to disputes over rubbish bins etc. It is otherwise, tops for chic town-center dwelling, if that is a lifestyle which would suit you. More of a luxury batchelor pad, than a family home perhaps?

As warren_peace says you wouldn't know it was there. Tucked in its own courtyard bounded by and disguised by Retail Therapy, Loftcat and the loading bay by the car park entrance to Bircherley Green.

Hertford has a number of odd locations like this. There are the small, modern houses tucked away off Bull Plain, opposite the Hertford Club. There are the houses down the access road next to Bairstow Eves. There is the house down the side of Ask Pizza. I think the house Warren_Peace is referring to is the most hidden though.

It looks fantastic, but its a case of 'Location Location Location'. I certainly wouldn't pay £425k to live opposite the Duncombe Arms. With 4 bedrooms I don't exactly see it as a batchelor pad either.

Well I think the décor and intrinsically developed areas are supuoib. Asking price? Not what I would pay, even in Mayfair. Where's the underground parking for the DB5? [V]

I think I would find it claustrophobic if I lived there - feeling 'walled in'. There can't be much natural light and no views can there? Or garden for that matter. Do your kids a favour and look elsewhere. For that price I'm sure you could get a nice house in a nicer location with a decent garden. When you are buying a house, you should always think of how easy it would be for you to sell it...

Surely, I must be a bit stupid here, but surely YOU, your family and children should come to the conclusion as to whether you can live in the Centre of busy thriving night-life filled town and want to live in the property, not ask forum members what they like, they aren't going to have the same tastes or needs!...I myself think you either like a place or you don't.. if you don't keep looking... if it ticks all the boxes for you and your family great, if it doesn't keep looking..

I used, sorry me and the missus used to live off Bull Plain, its a place called Odd Fellows Court, great location and really quite quiet. In response to you, Drama Queen (living up to type aren't you ;-) ) Im gathering evidence, its what you do before forking out almost half a mill to move down. I have found out more here than what ANY estate agent would give up.Thanks.Its is a really attractive property isn't it.But yeah, parking a problem, bins a problem.Any more advice ?Appreciated, it really is,thanks.

How about this house instead? Town centre location, Garage, Garden, Parking, 4 Beds... It sounds to me a bit like when you want a new car that you really can't quite justify having but you have taken it for a drive and you are in love with it. Just think to yourself once you have bought it, it might not seem so appealling. You will begin to notice niggly things that need doing. The noise might start to annoy you. Th elack of view. The lack of parking. The lack of garden etc. The fact that you are asking people's opinion means you are not sure. If you are not sure the best thing to do is walk away. (In my opinion anyway). But it's up to you (and your wife!) at the end of the day.

Its getting daft now, was even thinking about buying another place near, renting it, just for the car park space. I wonder if the owner would let me stay in it for the weekend ? Got used to the market when living in Bulls Plain, had a generator outside my house pumping away all last night, felt nowt.Saying that,it was at the front of the house, we sleep at the back. It IS a shared house option for young commuters isn't it really ? I suspect many shared access problems , parking is a legend, major rumpus at the weekends,bins a problem,shop alarms a problem, no garden as such,not exactly a bargain really. I think I'll arrange a viewing.

I actually sympathise with warren-peace on this one. I also really like this house. It's significant that, though I've known about it from before the restoration started, I haven't bought it. If I could have found any way to justify it's purchase, either as a home or an investment, I would have done.

we looked at this house. it is fantastically done out, but with a young child, the noise, the parking problem (although Shepherds will tell you there is a potential parking solution - renting a space off the owners at another property the other side of Fore Street - very convenient!) we decided against it. It may be the "perfect property" but if you've got to walk through vomit stains to get to your front door, get knocked over by passers by leaving your front door, and can't sleep all night because of the noise from pubs, the novelty will soon wear off. The price keeps being lowered, to reflect the fact that they can't sell. And you have to ask yourself why noone else has bought it. Still, it's your decision at the end of the day!! (Also, aren't the bathrooms in odd locations? can't remember it exactly, but i've got a feeling there are only ensuites, no "normal" bathroom. Although I could have got it mixed up with another house - we saw so many!!

Thinking long and hard about this, much better options though I will always envy the person that can buy this place without having given it as much thought. For about 10 minutes.
