Witnessed The Folly 4pm
In this day & age this is almost not worth reporting but here goes.
Spotty faced lad comes over the Folly Bridge in a van belonging to one of the big courier companies ….with mobile pressed to his ear. Traverses the bridge , the sharp turning at the Barge & stops at the tiny commercial estate on the Island, where he stops, goes in (with mobile pressed to his ear) and then reverses into the yard (with mobile pressed to his ear).. Seconds later comes out of yard & drives off back across the bridge (and you guessed it ..with mobile pressed to his ear).
It was about this point that I took the video........
I assume the kid must have made his delivery & done the entire signing stuff one handed. I do wonder what the customer thought. What we ( the pedestrians) thought was a bit of rather c**p driving……….

I see this all the time, as I usually am the poor person in an office who has to greet the courier "boys" with their parcels.. I told one to turn the phone off the other day or else I wouldn't sign for the parcel!!!!!! Seriously, the law was changed and its made no difference at all I believe most company vans have the "how's my driving " etc bit on the back and if I get the chance on another occasion, I will call, give the van registration and see if that doesn't do it.. When will people learn?

It was a bit daft when the telephone no is in foot high letters on the side of the van. The apologetic phone call from Regional Manager was received this am. Having said, that having spent 30 minutes waiting for their "customer relations" people to answer my call yesterday, I nearly got run down oppo the Barge by some plumber from Ware doing said same thing. At which point I gave up.

If being contactable by phone is part of the job, I'd say installing hands-free systems in the vehicles could be considered the responsibility of the employer. It could be argued that to not do so requires or encourages employees to commit an illegal act, something which could cost a company dear at tribunal. I expect there will be a test case sooner or later.

My brother's a plasterer and started his profession before mobile phones were available.. he was always checking in on his phone when he had a break.. I think that's an excuse too far.. I know he doesn't have his phone on in his van to stop this temptation.. He's a good boy.. many, as we are reading about here, are not..

For the courier guy, mobiles are banned - they apparently have a radio system. That said I did enquire how much the company checked on this a comment & a couple of lines in a 50 page induction manual to a brand new driver ain't going to have that much effect - even though the company will say they "ticked the box". You don't just tell, you have to enforce, that’s precarious liability for you. To be honest if I had a mobile when I was 19 (think we’d only just got a land line then!)I'd be on it all the time not realizing the potential (fatal) consequences.
For the plumber – well just a prat......
And for the video fairly rubbish quality I'm afraid - got the van no real pic of the driver & then The Graniad got in the way! I'll have anothe look & may put on.
