The Snug

Went to the Snug for cocktails at weekend, first time for about six months or so. Whats happened to the place? The cocktails lacked presentation - at £5.75 - £7+ each they are not cheap! Bar staff seemed a bit young and "clueless" about what they were serving. When The Snug first opened I was very impressed with the food, service, staff and general atmosphere (and cocktails!) - definately not so on this occasion. Will think twice about going back!

Have to agree, the last time I went in there (admittedly a few weeks ago) a gin and tonic was a half pint beer glass filled with ice, one measure of gin and topped up with tonic. Rum and coke was done the same way. Not impressed.

The correct way to serve a G and T is not in a half pint glass, but a 12oz or branded gin glass, FILLED with ice, spirit over ice, topped with wedge of LIME, not lemon and topped up with a baby tonic. The reason being, the more ice there is in the glass, it is able to compact to keep the drink colder, for a longer period of time. The less ice you have in the glass, the quicker it melts, therefore watering down the G and T resulting in a warm drink, sooner than desired. That is the Gospel according the St. Gordon!! (Courtesy of Diagio - owners of Gordons and Smirnoff among others) It is the same with other spirits and mixers.

My understanding is that there have been some "operational issues" which they are in the process of addressing.

Its just a shame I had to find out about their operational issues the hard way - after spending out on two rounds of cocktails for 3 people!! An expensive and disappointing night! Why not "suspend" the cocktail menu and stick to a more traditional bar menu until they sort out these issues! I definitely wont be going back for a while! Hope other people vote with their feet until the situation improves!

I voted with my feet and stopped going here in February. The service and quality of the drinks I got on a couple of occasions here at the start of the year was disappointing to say the least. It looked like they were short staffed and really stretched if the bar had more than just a few in. The Mojito's I ordered were hopeless. Rooster, if your real ale wasn't so good I'm extremely tempted at the description of the perfect G&T.[:o)]

Rooster's description of a g&t is all the more remarkable as generally it is generally not wise to order anything, but real ale in a real ale establishment, unless you enjoy warm, flat, out of date tonic with one lump of ice. Top marks for all round service, Rooster.

Couldn't agree more. Me and husband used to go there a lot for food that wasn't amazing, but decent quality pub food from a non-chain.We went there a few weeks ago and will not be rushing back - the food was towards the lower end of OK-ish, the 'cocktails' tasted like lighter fluid and it was ust generally not good. I think the lady who used to cook has left and doesn't seem to have been replaced by someone who can do as good a job [B)] I get the impression that they are cutting corners and it isn't paying off [V]

If it's combined maybe but this was an indiscribable mess, slipping unpleasently down the side of the glass and could be smelt from the window seat while it was made. YUK.

I must admit to having been puzzled that this bar was as well received as it was. Having read reccomendations here, a group of us decided to give it a go. What we found was an extraordinary bar, with a poor bar layout, the constant smell of urine as people went through the toilet door and a clientelle who may have been from another planet (one which has no atmosphere). It seemed to be relying entirely on it's non-smoking status to attract people who have never been to a pub before and therefore didn't know that this is not what pubs are like. Not smart enough to be a trendy bar, not cosy enough to be traditional, the feeling was that we'd walked into an American TV sit-com set.

The Snug has very pleasant and friendly staff. On the few occasions I have eaten there i could not complain at all about the food. The snug is a quiet and pleasant location for a drink mid week. I recommend live music night on Tuesday evenings. As for the Bloody Mary's, they are as hot as the bargirls![;)]

Echo all the comments about their breakfast. Just posted about not being able to get brekky past 11 in the Masters House & 12 at the Hertford House "all day " Grill (at 1207 - any one see "Falling Down" [:(!]) Was on way to the Rose when remembered this place. Full English for me & Eggs Benedict for my mate, lots of orange juice, decent coffee & tea all served up with a smile and all very good (& by that time both of us , in particular my friend, were in a mood to be very difficult customers[}:)]) Walked out with a smile on our faces & feeling very well fed - Damn might do it again this "morning".......... (note to other restaurants - on Sunday "breaking ones fast" has nothing to do with what time it says on a clock - it's all about when I, the customer, feel like getting up & eating, unless you can fill your place with Sunday Lunchers, in which case I'll admit to missing the boat...)

Agreed. Had breakfast here at about 1pm one day during the week. Plenty of it and very nice. My only suggestion would be a free tea re-fill. At £1.85 (ish) a mug t'was a bit steep. For the same price in Baroosh you get a large pot! You never know where you're next cuppa tea's coming from! [;)]

Critique from Mrs 007's friend on first visit, last Saturday at 1pm as she has run a pub for years: Two men, obviously friends to the bar staff, sitting at the bar, talking about their hangovers. Could not get any attention from the staff. "you alright there?" from the barman to me was not an impressive start. We were told to sit down at a table and drinks would be brought over to us. I didn't count but there were lots of tables empty. 8 minutes later and one diet coke and a glass of vino arrives with a 'tip tray'. Female staff member welcomes a customer with a hug and just continues to chat to her. Some bloke in scruffy jeans sauntering around looking at us until I realise that he was a staff member. Not sure how to pay? We could have just got up and walked out. Dirty, poorly managed in the highest terms, the seats were falling apart, the toilets were urrrggghh and the music was too loud for Saturday lunchtime. My friend joked that she would have probably enjoyed the Lord Haig more.

Popped in yesterday, found the staff very inattentive and we waited an age to order despite the chap informing us he would be back in a second, another group waited even longer than we did to order and it was 40 minutes between their drinks arriving til they placed their order. When or plates had been cleared we waited for a further 10 minutes before Mrs W went off in search of desert. I also detest being called "mate" by the waiting staff. Food was average and I only had one drink because the chap never came back to check the food was OK or to offer more drinks. Overall I wasn't that impressed and probably won't bother going back.

great attitiude, Winter! I went in there on Thursday evening and although not packed, all the tables were taken and there were quite a few people standing. Still, I get served immediately at the bar and again as soon as a passing member of staff noticed our glasses were nearly empty. The main draw the Snug had over other premesis in Hertford when it opened was that it was non-smoking. Now they've lost that and they don't really have an edge over other bars. Still, I quite like the place and normally include it as a stopping point whenever I'm drinking in Hertford

Hi Winter, I own the Snug Bar. Thank you so much for highlighting the issues relating to your terrible experience at my Hertford site. I apologise that we have let you down with this poor service and it makes me very frustrated that it concerns just general common sense and courtesy. I will look into the situation tomorrow, when I intend to make a visit to the bar. Needless to say, I will speak to all those involved who worked that shift and use your feedback as a tool to make the guys understand why this level of service is not acceptable. I am really sorry that you received this poor service and can only empathise with you and let you know what we intend to do. As much as I hate to know we have let our guests down, I sincerely appreciate you spending the time letting me know. If you have the time, I would like to speak with you so that I can get some more details on your visit and then look at ways of preventing this from happening again. Perhaps you would be good enough to contact me by visiting our website at http://www.thesnugbar.co.uk. I take a vested interest in reading through all the comments made on this forum and I can assure everyone that I take them very seriously and act on them as soon as possible and I hope that this reply is testimony to this. We are very proud to be trading in Hertford and realise that many concepts have caught up and copied what we started. The Snug is a local, Independant business not a National Brand. We will be celebrating our 5th Birthday in 2 weeks and as much as we will be having loads of special offers on, we will also be promoting what we will be doing differently this year......including new banquette furniture. We occasionally make mistakes.......but we are willing to learn. Thank you.

Good reply Giles, glad to see some new furniture arriving, we stopped going because we felt that if the owners were comfortable with the dilapidated sofas then they were possibly cutting corners in the kitchen too. Replacement was due a long time ago and I believe has resulted in some lost customers. Bring on the banquette furniture !

I've always liked the Snug. Personally never had a problem with the service. Its nice to have your drink replenished without having to fight your way to the bar - this is what makes it still unique in my view. One small complaint I have is that during the day it can resemble a toddlers creche - lots of kids running around while mummies gossip and sip their lattes. So I'll avoid it during the afternoon - but not the morning cos the full english is brill!!!

parents do have to go somewhere for Coffee. They're banned from Chaverspoons unless they buy a main meal for everyone in the party. Nero's is too cramped so the only other options are other pubs/bars, Starbucks or (our preference) The Castle Hall cafe. It's nice to have a choice of venue's and the Snug do have a few toys to keep kids amused

I understand the need to get out but why is it that adult establishments like bars and pubs have to be taken over by loads of kids! Certainly puts me off spending my money on a good bottle of wine when I see a load of pushchairs and mums drinking coffee.

For me the issue is not about the kids being in there, its about them running around / throwing toys / bashing into your table and chair legs while you are trying to have a conversation with someone, and the mums dont do anything to control them cos they are too busy chatting amongst themselves.

Shiraz, can I ask how often you visit the Snug during the week - Morning/Lunch? The reason I ask is that it’s not all about adult/evening/quiet drinks. I bet the “Mummy trade” brings in a good source of income for the Snug. After all if the young mum’s/clubs of Hertford know they can go somewhere and socialise with their children then they will keep coming back. I can’t imagine Hertford’s day time trade is thriving, so any means/ways to increase footfall into a store/pub/bar makes sense. Point in case is Cafe Yum Yum. My wife use to go there once a week with friends but one day we’re asked to leave because they had been their too long (even though they were buying drinks/food) with their babies. They in turn told their friends all with young children about what “happened” and Café Yum Yum has been struck off the “young mum’s places to go list”. I guess from word of mouth their trade must have diminished somewhat as (and i’m sure this has nothing to do with my wife and her club(s)) recently Café Yum Yum has opened a soft play area for babies/children. Make of that what you wish but personally I feel in the current climate (or any climate) money in the till is key and by whatever means you can get it so be it. Personally, I feel the Snug pitches it just right. If you know children are going to be in their go to Bar Roosh as they do no allow Children. Plus the full English breakfast in the Snug is spot on, as is the honey smoothy!

So should an establishment that has its weekday sales propped up by Mothers with Children, turn their back on them at the weekend to accommodate child free indviduals who's total weekend spend is potentially less than than someone who visits 3-4 afternoons a week? Looking at your first post on this topic, you seem to have had some beef with the Snug for the last 3 1/2 years, granted I have not had time to read the whole topic, but I am confused why you persist in visiting?

but you've missed the point; if EVERYONE had that policy, trade as a whole would definately suffer. Surely you're not saying everyone should be the same. Now, I'm personally not a fan of kids in pubs/bars but it easy to say that when you don’t have them. I do think that these sorts of establishments are really for adults but I understand that these places are probably quiet during week days and have to get revenue somewhere. So, I vote with my feet and don’t go the snug. I get used to going to pubs that don’t have kids and don’t change where I go dependant on the time of day.

I would suggest the opposite to the above though. I would imagine on average an adult say at the Sung on the weekend spends a greater amount than a mother and child going 3-4 afternoons per week. Otherwise they’d simply be a mother and child place 100% of the time.

My original point was that it is not about the kids being in there - I have no problem with that being a father myself - it is the lack of control of them, and the fact that some mums would rather chat and sip lattes than control their offspring. By all means allow kids in during the day but that doesn't mean it has to resemble a toddlers' playgroup with toys being thrown / kicked around, running and jumping up and down on the wooden floorboards, bashing into chairs / tables etc and therefore spoiling the ambience for those customers who do not have kids! It stops me from going there during the day and means I spend the cash somewhere else instead - and I would be spending more than a mother / child, I have no doubt! I also think it is a difficult situation for the barstaff to handle - its the parents responsibility to control and not theirs.

Yours is suggestion, mine is potential. In all they both the same in a roundabout way. Mine was based on a person buying a bottle of house wine one friday afternoon per week, compared to a Mother and Child, "potentially" buying tea/coffee/soft drinks, cakes, sandwitches, 3-4 times a week. Obviously I do not have the figures to back that up, but the fact that the Snug caters for children by actually providing toys maybe an indication. Robbo, I couldnt agree with your comment I also think it is a difficult situation for the barstaff to handle - its the parents responsibility to control and not theirsmore.

Regulars will have seen that since the last few issues that were raised, we have made ammends to take positve action. We now have new banquette seating and our menu has changed in April to reflect greater value for money, especially at lunchtime. It can be very difficult to trade in a town like Hertford, where there are 18 licensed premises, 15 of which are McMullins owned in such a strong trading area. I make a point of listening to all feedback and where appropriate will make changes to suit what our guests would like. It's one of the advantages of running a small independant business ;we are able to change quickly. Take a look at our website as for the first time we will be putting on a regular Summer BBQ in our garden and hosting Hertford's first Cocktail Festival!! Thank you for taking the time to let us know how we're doing.

They do a lovely Full English. Not the biggest but it certainly isnt from the same suppliers as everyone else. I want to know where you get your bacon from!

I could be very sarcastic and tell you that we get all our bacon from.....Pigs. But actually we use a fantastic local Hertfordshire Burtcher in St Albans. Glad you like the meat. We also insist on using British meats where possible.

Do the bar staff still free-pour cocktails? I had a couple of long island iced teas in there once, but they were very weak and I noticed a lot of the alcohol being spilt over the bar instead of going in my glass.

Being upgraded at the moment - anyone know what they are doing?

Gemma, I've been in there a couple of times recently and its looking tired and run down so could do with a lick of paint at least. I think they could also do with some experienced barmen - they're all very flashy but take an age to make a drink and unless you have a cocktail you're treated like a second class citizen! Also recently couldn't understand my dismay at being charged nearly £5 for a single shot of Baileys!

Hi Gemma. I can tell you that having been a part of Hertford for the past 6 years we are setting the bar up for the next 6 years. You may know that we are local to the area and independent, so the money we spend on the site is all generated from ourselves and the custom from the good people of the local area. Unfortunately there is no help from our Landlord. It's been in the pipeline for ages, but in summary we are replacing the floor, giving the whole place a new look with furniture to match and most importantly, refurbishing the toilets. We will also be launching 2 new menus, which means new cocktails for everyone to try with our homemade food and wine to match. The team are being trained as I write this and so I hope the quality remains high and we'll try making the drinks faster.......if everyone ordered Baileys it would be too easy, although we have never charged £5 for a single shot of the Irish Cream! It's still a very tough economic environment that we trade in, but we firmly believe in giving great value for money, hiring local team members, paying our taxes and supporting the local community! I hope everyone comes along and sees what changes we have made and supports us as much as they have done these past 6 years. It's a very positive time for us and I hope the forum reacts positively to the way we are investing in Hertford. We re-open on Saturday 13th April.

Giles I questioned your barman who assured me it was the right price and the right measure - think it may have been £4.70 but it was definitely nearly £5 as I stated.
