Victor, i would have put the waterside in as a great place for night out, gay fun, and top burgers & steaks but as its no longer there i cant include it ;) I know the barman you are talking about pretty well ;) he was my favorite in town, shame he's gone x

I admit I was very surprised by the outdoor seating area at the back (not so much the one in the square) Good for a summers day. The Old Barge, riverside and plenty of outdoor seating. Ram if yiu want to 'people watch'[:I]

Interestingly, the Old Barge has reserved some of the outside tables for non-smokers. I wonder how many other pubs have done that?

The Old Cross Tavern is the only pub in Hertford whose landlord can get real ales from whoever he wants to. I mean that he isn't restricted to a brewery/pub company list(eg,White and Black Horses, Old Barge). The OXT is consequently my favourite. Great Belgian beer range too. The Vine in Ware also seems to be following suit and getting plenty of small independent brewer's ales. I haven't spotted any tie there yet. The Vine also does the best burger in my opinion and also the best homemade chips. No pub in Hertford does homemade chips. Although I would love to be wrong here. Although I live in Bengeo, I regard anywhere in Ware to be as local as in Hertford.

White Hart is now much better. OXT has fab beers but lacks something (?) I'm looking forward to seeing how the Great Eastern has changed since smoking ban, I found it really friendly but the smoke drove me out! The bar at Hertford F.C is good on a Saturday (football season) with some good bottled beers.

The BH is also only allowed to pick from a guest beer list supplied by Greede King. I also agree with you about the atmosphere at the OXT (try asking the regulars to move from the bar to let you get served and you realise what I mean) but I only go there for the beer. For a sociable drink I'll go elsewhere.

I wouldn't class The Snug or Baroosh as Pubs at all. Wine bars maybe but not a pub in the traditional sense. The Snug is strange as Shunt said the other week. Got to be Thew Black Horse, Woolpack, Duncombe, OXT and The White Lion
