There will be an opportunity to meet TV celebrity gardener Christine Walkden at the next Farmers Market on Saturday August 11th. She is well known for her BBC series ‘Christine’s Garden’ and will be in Market Place, Hertford from 11.00am to sign copies of her latest book – ‘A Year in Christine’s Garden’. She came to Hertford to film a typical Farmers Market for her TV series which was screened last year. She thought Hertford so special. Worth coming along on iith for beef, lamb, vegetables, eggs, bread, cheese, jams, relishes and much, much more as well.

I agree, I bought some fantastic bread and pain au chocolate the other weekend.. and there are some lovely soaps and things on a stall nearby.. Its certainly looking a lot better than it did.. and am looking forward to trying to get to meet her to sign a book.. and tell me if my marrows are up to scratch!!!

tha last farmers market in hertford, i was shocked to see that nearly all stalls had cleared up and gone at 1pm, i was keen to buy something, but was working in the morning. They either had sold everything or couldn't be bothered to stay longer unlike the rest of the normal market, the las man to leave is always the egg man, sometimes 6pm.

The Farmers Market is great. I think they should look to extend it a little and have a few more stalls also as MOG states perhaps they should look to continue trading throughout the day. I'm always down at the market early on a saturday when it's on so that I don't miss out on the various bits and pieces we like to buy but having it run all day would be good for the town also.

Sorry MOG but it is advertised as being from 8.30 until 1.00. It's only lately that they remained until 1.00 as many had sold out by midday and cleared up. Hopefully all the existing power points and extra ones now being installed will help the producers to keep more stock at the stall for as we get into summer (at last) refridgeration is a big issue. Getting Christine Walkden along is a big plus and all down to Carole Skidmore at East Herts who has more to do with the success of this market than anyone else. Still can't get banners up in town so we are now turning to other means of promoting the market such as marrow signing and last time we had a chef cooking local produce. There should be more of this over the coming months with more of the local produce that is being sold being cooked on site for tasting - marrow burgers might even get on the menuu. Next month Waitrose are putting on a display of locally sourced produce available in store. Looking at NOvember and December now.

A bit about extending the market. It has to work alongside the charter market so we have used the bay outside Kids Connection. I have thought about placing it along Fore Street as I have existing electrical power there but it might need road closures; but there is an excellent marketing tool in having a market in Market Place. Hoping to get a shot of the market as at today with one taken about 1900 for furture promotional purposes. Carole and myself get calls every week asking for a stall on this market but prospective sellers have to undergo a strident evaluation as we achieved FARMA Accrediatation in July 2005 which means all produce has to sourced, grown or produced within 30 miles of Hertford unlike some other markets close by. We are therefore very local and the waiting list is growing; we continue to work with whomever we can to try and extend the market both in size, location and produce.

Its a great market. All markets abroad in France only remain open til 1pm, its the norm.. The thought being, you have to get there early to get the best produce and as the day moves on and gets hotter (in summer) the food will suffer, so sell it before it goes and wilts! I think the market recently has been looking lovely and so nice to see people trying the food, buying it and making our little town lovely. My marrow is not quite ready for Christine to sign.. but better I grow better ones than her!!!!!

Thanks to everyone for turning up last Saturday - good to see so many visitors. Christine Walkden was totally pleasantly surpised by the interest. She brought 40 books along - sold the lot. Could have sold 40 more. I believe she gave a few people her contact details to order personally but we are hoping to have her back in December in time for Christmas gift ideas.

Fantastic day. I couldn't stay to see Christine, but I've got her book and will bring it along for her to sign prior to my family getting it as an xmas pressie!!!! I love the market and its what you get every Saturday in France or Belgium.. More please.. its great!

I really enjoyed the market this week - and has something happened to the stalls along Bircherly Green? They seemed to be different - wooden toys and stuff? And were they pointing a different way or something? It certainly looked better. I like the mix too. Jewellery, cheese, breads, crepes, olives, puddings... alongside batteries, army surplus and shell suits. I personally like a market to be a higgledy piggledy mish mash of things.
