She stood out from the spot where the issue sellers usually stand, allowing people to pass through a small gap. she was wailing 'BBBBBBBBIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGG IIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSUUUUUUUEEEEEEE' as she thrusted it in your face. Thats all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do like my personal space.

No better or worse than the collectors which were blocking the entrance to Waitrose I'd say. Yes we bought a Big Issue, as we always do.

I used to buy it everyweek when the big Guy was there. I have never seen anyone buy one since. She grates on my nerves, may aswell record it and save the vocal cords. The lady at Waitrose (if that was Saturday) did not try to push anything. Most people would then give happly to the good cause.

One of the market stall holders in that area was complaining about her, I think she was driving everyone up the wall [:D]

I also thought she was very annoying, she started singing too! I wondered when it would appear on here! Perhaps she is just high on life!

Big issue collectors are amongst those who the charity assists. They are bound to be a varied bunch, and don't come in the standard white, middle-aged, middle-class, church-goer, dressed from Edinburgh Wool Mills.

I think you've missed the point Shunt. I think it's the invasive nature of her sales technique that seems to be the issue.

Oh I agree that this is a squarking banshee of excentricity and seems oddly out of place to Hertford, but is she? Big issue salepersons often call out their wares and this woman is surrounded by shouting market traders so should seem right in place. For some reason she doesn't, even to me, but thinking back, I don't find anything offensive in her style, just unfamiliar.

It's not just the noise of the Market Traders, she does it all week.

It was difficult to miss her annoying wailing, I think she's part of a crew that I used to see frequently in Hoddesdon outside Tesco express and W.Garden city outside Howard centre. In these times where there exist many employment opportunities I find it difficult to support big issue sellers who seem to make it a full time occupation. She can howl all she likes.

Employment oportunities and benefits are indeed available if you have a permanent address and a permanent address is available to those who have employment or benefits. Big Issue is a charity for those who have niether, for whatever reason, and the majority of their work is creating the bridge between destitution and a the beginnings of a basic existence, of which the interim role of street seller is part. Homelessness knows no boundries of class, religion or ethnic origin and for this reason Big Issue has no religious affiliation, unlike so many others. Consequently it simply helps those who need it, without preaching and without causing more problems than it solves. Big Issue is also a fine and informative publication in it's own right, competitively priced.

Lighten up Shunt!!! we are on about the way she was selling this item not the actual product! The gentleman who used to be on that 'pitch' on the corner, was much more approachable!

Indeed he was and the woman in between didn't ever get out of her seat, due to injuries sustained when she was thrown off a train. My point is that big issue recruits are from a group which lives outside our normal experience and are mixed bunch. Some of them are a bit weird because of the circumstances they find themselves in and some are in those circumstances because they are a bit weird.[:D] The aim of the charity is noble and I'm willing to suffer a little weirdness to support that aim.[:)]

Risky strategy! She'd probably follow you for the rest of your life. [:0] Look, I some BI collectors are sometimes a bit odd, alcoholic, mentally ill, untidy, or foreign in there style, but please don't let the lack of a professional collector put you off contributing to a well run and audited charity or buying a damn good read for £1.

But, buying the rag encourages them to stay. There are some out-of-luck types where we don't mind giving but there are others who many would positively want to discourage. It's not that the rag is a good read or not, it's more down to an individuals sympathies.

This was on the Big Issue Website info. At the centre of our work is The Big Issue magazine, an award- winning entertainment and current affairs magazine, that is produced by professional journalists and sold on the streets by homeless people. In the UK, they buy the magazine from us for 70 pence and sell it on for £1.50, keeping 80 pence for themselves. [;)]

Hang on. So our rather noisy seller has been subsidising you to the tune of 50p a go (for how long now Shunt?) No wonder she's screeching!! Shes inadvertantly marketing a loss leader... She probably wasn't homeless when she started......[:D]

Sorry I don't like begging.. I think understated does it for me... less noise, less rattling of tins and I give... charities please note!

I'd imagine warren's comment was intended to be funny, rather than accurate. A publication written by tramps? Like the Beano? It's funny because, of so many publications, the BI least resembles this description. It's failing is that it is too high-brow to attract the casual Express/Mail/Sun/Sport reader.

[/quote] Oh dear warren - suggest you read up on your definition of "humour". There are plenty of contributors to this site who have one...unfortunately you do not. To make things even worse, looking at your posts over the last few weeks, you sadly are of the opinion that you DO have a sense of same . Which is all rather sad. However I won't follow your habit of laughing at the disadvantaged. Its all a bit Jim Davidson who has also made a career out of mocking easy & vulnerable targets . For that last few years he's been under the impression that people have been laughing with him whilst all but his most dedicated (& bigoted) followers have been laughing at the poor wretch.... Shunt.. I wish I shared your generosity of spirit..

I can't say Im as familiar with his work as you are.In fact, Id go as far to say your judging me in the way you just have is probably a lot worse than what I have done, but your too self rightous to see that .And still lack a sense of humour. No go and feck off .
