One day travelcard
Bought a one day travelcard this morning from Hertford North. Went into and around central London, came home. Ticket barriers swallowed my travelcard!
The man manning(?) the barriers informed that that was correct. I asked him what happens if I want to go back into London what do I do? He laughed.
Had a bit of an argument for the sake of it and gave up as the pub was beckoning.
This has got the fire in the belly stoked up, though, and I'm going to go for FCC's jugular with this one. I'll keep you informed.

It's the principle. FCC stole my ticket which was still valid!

Sorry John but unfortunately you are incorrect, once you return to Hertford your ticket is not valid for a return to London. This matter was discussed on here a few weeks ago. Although a one day travelcard gives the user unlimited travel within 'the zones' it is only valid for one return trip from Hertford to 'the zones' and back. A pain in the backside I know (I have had a similar experience) but a totally legitimate procedure by FCC.

The bit that allows me unlimited travel all day today in the London zones was still valid.
If I had bought another ticket to Crews Hill, the travelcard would still be valid.

Fair enough, I stand corrected. Keep us informed as to FCC's response, I would be interested to hear their excuse given that argument.

But how many people would do that if the travelcard was returned? I suspect most people returning to HN have finished with the Travelcard rather than returning home temporarily. It also prevents the resale of used travelcards by undesirable elements as happens quite often in London. Perhaps in circumstances where you really want to reuse it again in London ,it is best to ask to go through the manually operated gate so that you can retain the ticket. Will be interesting to see what FCC say.

If the travelcard was returned, you wouldn't be able to use the Hertford North to Crews Hill part again - the barriers would not let you through. You would be forced to buy another ticket to Crews Hill. Therefore, no chance of bucking the system.
What happens if:
a) you don't know that the barriers will swallow your travelcard and
b) the staff won't retrieve it from the barriers
You have had your perfectly valid travelcard stolen from you!
There is no indication on the ticket nor any explanation given when you buy the travelcard that it is a return to Crews Hill and an all zones travelcard.

I agree that you aren't made aware of the fact when you buy the ticket. The first time I noticed was when I was staying in London. I bought an underground ticket & the machine swallowed it upon reaching the zone boundary.
