Creaseys of Hertford
For any Forummers old enough to remember, next week marks the 25th anniversary of the demise of Creaseys.
At the time it was Hertford's third largest employer (after County Hall and Addis)and there was much controversy surrounding the collapse of the company.
Anyone with any thoughts or memories? (apart from my own - how can it be 25 years??

I worked there for about two years during the relocation from Bull Plain to Castlemead.

For those of us not old enough, can you share a bit more information about the company? My only memory of the name is the stationery shop where the tanning shop on the corner of Fore Street/Market Street now is.

I remember the shop in the Arcade at the end of Bull Plain - it had an upstairs bit too - great shop [:)]

Potted History goes something like...
Started in 1888 as Printers in Bell Lane, then into Bull Plain with shop opposite. Expanded in the 1960's with eventually 8 or so shops by aquisition throughout Herts. Expanded during the 1970's with quality colour printing as well as office equipment. Towards the end of 70's bought or leased new office in Castlemead (where Consumers Association now resides) and grew like the proverbial topsy. At one point had a turnover reaching £6 million and 250+ employees and loads of company cars.
Recession of the early eighties eventually bit, and a combination of huge overheads and falling sales lead to the downfall - only a few years away from the centenary.
Many people locally will know the flamboyant John Creasey - who will no doubt be able to correct this quick entry.
Needless to say many people were affected by the receivership; however, on a positive note, some, including myself, were able to start new businesses on the back of this sad demise.
