The roads in and around Hertford town are in an absolutely dire condition..why? Do we not pay taxes for them to be repaired. I know that the "olde worldy" look and feel to hertford is something that has of late been propagated to encourage tourism.. perhaps authentic old up-and-down,cracked,potholed tracks/roads are all part of this grand scheme! If not then perhaps the council can dig some dosh out of its vaults and pay for them to be repaired properly .. and i dont mean a few bits of coloured tarmac here and there for the buses to stop on and for so -called cycle lanes... ie North road.. what an absolute mess.

I totally agree with you and as for the state of the road from Old Cross to Gasgoigne way roundabout, that is absolutely disgraceful, County town of Hertfordshire, well !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hands up all those who asked for the massive amount of superfluous road markings, signs, lights and the rest of the clutter of excessive street furniture which ruins our town scene. Pavements which we can walk on and roads which are smoother than the moon, is about all most people expect. That and trains which go somewhere useful in reasonable time.

Oh we love a bit of street furniture in Hertford. Not quite enough bollards in Parliament Square for my liking - can't wait for the railings to go up round the memorial - more stuff for the skaters to impale themselves on [:)]

Perhaps the highways department don't use the roads to get to work, that's why we have to tell them!!!! Perhaps they drive to work in 4x4's that soak up the holes and they just are oblivious to the dangerous conditions. Try using these roads on a motorbike, and you'll lose all the fillings in your head!!

funny thread; I guess things are relative. I recently spent a week driving around SanFrancisco and LA, and I can say for sure our roads are amazingly flat compared to those in America! This was also in a big american car with very soft suspension!

What's the problem with the council's phone line? Surely you don't expect the Highways Department to drive every inch of every road checking for problems. And when they set up phone lines and online reporting methods to make it easier for people to report problems they are mocked. they can't win, can they?
