Two of the stone pillars that are either side of the steps on the War Memorial have been knocked over. They can be repaired and restored but it was an act of criminal damage. Not sure when this was done so cannot locate the offenders on CCTV. Might be sometime this week; but no one had reported it until the Town Council staff noticed it this morning. If anyone saw person(s) in area trying to knock over the pillars be grateful if you would contact me through my profile. Thanks.

I don't think even I can exert that kind of request on CCTV - sad, but in the order of things its not that a serious offence. I know their capabilities and resources and appreciate their more than occassional help but do need a better window. If someone can say I saw the damage on xday but it was OK on yday then it helps.

Could it be the "bike and skater gang" that still think the war memorial is a stunt ramp? It's not that i'm against youngsters having fun with such activities, but have they not been taught to respect such a monument? [:(!] On soapbox...They may, rightly or wrongly, have little understanding that the way we live today is indicative of what was given back then. Howewever, there are men and woman still dying today in conflict and the memorial is a representation of their memory too...Off soapbox. I can not be the only one sat outside Caffe Rouge who has similar feelings[?]

Am I just being an old fogey by suggesting that what they need is not features on the war memorial to make it less attractive but a firm and friendly talking to followed by a clip round the ear if they continue?

But Carlos in this namby pamby state of sandal wearing liberal toss--rs a clip round the ear would result in a fine/ jail sentance for the clipper not the clippee 'cos it would infringe their bloody human rights, and the fat cat lawyers get another £300 per hour fee, unless it was administered by a policeman (which it wouldn't red tape, assault, etc), who we don't see unless with a radar gun by the side of the road.

I appreciate Richie's sentiments about the war memorial, but I don't see any evidence for holding a particular social group responsible, even if they do spend some time near the monument. You can't argue that: the skaters spend a lot of time near the monument and the monument has been damaged, therefore it must have been the skaters - with all due respect Richie, and I can see that you are a caring and passionate person, it just doesn't work that way. (I'm not a skater, don't know any, and have no reason whatsoever to defend them, apart from logic). It's entirely possible, but without any evidence it's difficult to make a sound accusation. But regardless of blame, as Richie says, whoever did this was totally disrespectful - be that through ignorance or malice, it's just plain wrong. It saddens me deeply to see this sort of damage and the suggestion that it may have been intentional/unlawful makes it all the more disrespectful. I sometimes sit at Cafe Rouge with many thoughts about servicemen fighting for our country, but I think what gives me the most pleasure is going out and spending time with ex-servicemen, sometimes taking them to an old RAF airfield, get-together with other ex-servicemen, organise flights in old military aeroplanes with current pilots, reminisce about old times, some experiences spoken about, other things best left unsaid. Sitting talking to these old guys about their time in the military, just listening, never asking intrusive or potentially inappropriate questions - it means a lot to them. The memorial reminds me of all of these things every time, and to think that someone would wilfully go and damage it in this way is heartbreaking. Anyway, I'm babbling now, but is there any way you could get CCTV footage for a few days or a week preceding the find, if you could get the videos? Is there any way a group of volunteers could sit and look through the footage - a few hours each might be all that's required? Not wanting to be excessively emotive, but my dad is lying on his death bed as we speak. He served in the RAF. A few days ago he pulled up his oxygen mask pointed at it, smiled, and proudly said "Air crew!!" before placing it back on his face and falling back to sleep. I will never forget that. I have family in the military now. Thankfully they are ok, but they have lost many close fellow servicemen in recent years. Miscreants who damage memorials like this [:(!] <deleted> [:(!] and I feel ashamed that this has happened in our own home town, to the extent that the memorial now needs these modifications for protection. A sad day for Hertford. However, I would rather have a war memorial that the young were using and was part of the town than something overgrown and forgotten like so many are in graveyards. It raises some kind of awareness, surely - even subconscious? Sometimes it might start with disrespect (or seeming disrespect) but which grows in later laife to a sense of shared ownership - if only that they used to play there...just a thought for bedtime.
