Hertford Nameology
Born in Hertford, my great granny and grandad held the surname Blackwell from Bury in the North West.
I know it is not a local name like others.
I remember the Vigus name being mentioned as a kid.
What is the most common surname in Hertford?

Judging by problems in reseaching my family Taylor.
I know of at least 3 other families with no connection to ours and have got back in hertford as far as 1730.
There are quite a few local families who were farmers/ millers / maltsters etc.
Been doing some reseach on other peoples local families for them and often come across names I recognise in the parish records.
Just had my Hertford and Ware local history society journal with a list of the corporation 1896/1900 here are some local names, see how many you recognise!

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Hart - a common surname round these parts from my experience. Many of the surnames mentioned above are those of local dignitaries or landowners, rather than frequently found surnames. This is why they often come up in local history studies.

I realise that but a lot of the families are still around the area
Not sure about frequently found names, probably much the same as evrywhere else according to what people did so Baker/ Smith/ Taylor etc, not sure any are perculiar to this area though.

James I used to live at the very far end of Bengeo and the name Vigus I vaguely remember that was the farmer and his family who owned the land from the end of Bengeo down to Chapmore end and beyond?

The Vigus family is a very large one, they had a number of farms round the area there are / were a number of brothers who each had a different farm I think

When I was at Goldings,one of the fields we were allowed to camp in was Vigus Farm, and we used to help pick vegatable's for him and he would make a donation to our school William Baker Technical School a Barnardo home.I'm also looking for the name "Farnham" which apparently was a Hertford family,as he was one of our carpentry masters at Goldings,also Mr Greenhill possibly lived in Bengeo,Mr Wrangles was another,can anybody help!! The Goldings web site http://www.goldings.org list's many of the staff who were "Locals" Many thanks in anticipation Dave..Goldings 1962-65.
