Could this be the cause of the rapidly worsening traffic jams THROUGH the town? Every evening at about 5.30 I have to get from County Hall direction towards Bengeo via Old Cross and the last two weeks have been horrific. The trail of cars down Pegs Lane have great difficulty getting on to the 414 roundabout because cars waiting to get in to the town OFF the roundabout block the traffic flow. (Not much choice actually - if you waited for free space, you would be there for ever). The queue down to Old Cross is now actually backing up on to the A414. Why has it recently got so much worse?

Further investigation has revealed that the police withdrew traffic wardens from the town in April, with nothing to replace them. The District Council won't be providing cover until April 2004 at the earliest - and that assumes that the necessary legislation can be put in place.

Too true, but a major part of the problem is that the people coming down Pegs Lane turn right, in the right and MIDDLE lane, despite the road marking stopping this 8 years ago. They are blocking the Left lane of the A414, causing people to get frustrated and pull out onto the roundabout and block it. Its a no win situation. Do we know if the council are actively pushing for a by-pass anymore? Particularly as the Government have finally begun waking up to the problem (7 years behind the rest of the county!).

A by-pass would be heaven and I know that it was vetoed years back BUT I think it ought to be reconsidered. Just so I can open my windows at night! Traffic has increased tremendously and the impact on the town is enormous. As Dude said on another posting - it is the local population and their activities which are being sacrificed for the benefit of the M25-avoiding through traffic. It now takes me 45 minutes to travel from Hertford North to Pegs Lane and then to Hartham common in the evenings to pick up two kids. I cannot do it without a car as the kids are too small to walk the distances and there are no places to leave pushchairs. It took me longer on the "day we had the snow" back in January - but not much more. It has got much worse very suddenly. Shall we have a poll to see who wants a by-pass?
