Anyone any idea where it was or what was reffered to as Chalk island, somwhere on the meads but we don't know where?

Marilyn, your searches for obscure places for your hermitage are in vain. If you do run away from home, everybody on this forum will know where to start looking for you.

Could it be Chadwell Bank which I have heard called the Chalk bank. It is on the meads near Ware but not sure you could call it an island.

There's a house next to Chadwell Springs that has a massive wall at the rear which is pure chalk,leading up to the back of the golf course. I understand that to be 'The chalk bank'. Unsure about 'island' though.

Put a query on ware online, got some intersting info thanks for the ideas, it seems to be related to the mill and new river company. Will do some more digging.

The reference I found was to the daughter of the miller/maltster who lived on Chalk Island.

Find the meads on Multimap and select aerial photo. Just to the North West of Chadwell Spring, by the railway line and a 90 degree turn in the New River is an area of very light (white?) land that stands out from the rest of the meads which is green. Just an idea.

OK, serious response time: After discussion with my geology friend - he says that usually you get springs where a chalk outcrop comes into contact with an underlying clay layer (that is, at the base of the chalk). Under the pressure of the weight of water above in the chalk the lowest water is forced out. If there was a marshy area in Ware then the Chalk Island may have been a bit of chalk that stuck out and so provided a set of reliable springs. Beacuse Chalk is calcareous it provided "sweet" water - that is, clean in medeival times and so was much admired and often given saints' names. Not least as the chances are the Celts (who worshiped springs and things) would have had a religous/mystical site there in preChristain era and the good catholics of the early church were a pragmatic bunch who often just renamed local holy sites rather than take on local customs... probably not relevant, but in the late 40 s, i used to play in the old disused chalk pits that are now greens garage and industrial site on the ware road, after rolling around for a couple of hours in the chalk, we used to go home looking like snowmen, and that was in midd summer [;)]
