I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours in here last night, having never been in before. What a nice little pub. People were friendly, the Ale was excellent, and it wasnt all that expensive either. It was also a novelty to be able to have a civilised chat without some chav clutching a WKD or similar falling all over the place in the background. I thought it was a local pub for very local people but it seems I was wrong. I'll visit again...

I agree Exiled, it's a nice community pub and the beer is very well kept. According to the Greene King pubs-to-let website, the Black Horse tenancy is available. Thanks for the compliments exiled. We are pleased you had a good evening. Yes Rachel, it is common knowledge that we are leaving, and it will be sometime within the next five months. BUT, hopefully we won't be too far away and you can come and visit us. We will not know for sure until 15th, so we are keeping our fingers crossed. We love it here and are very reluctant to leave, but needs must, as they say.

Hope we get someone child friendly and who can turn the useless overgrown gated area in the garden into a nice children's play area, would have more family appeal then.

Having lived ther for many years you cannot turn that area in to a childrens play area as it is almost overlooking the next door neighbour's garden. You will find it very difficult with regards to insurance also die to the brick walls on three sides. I do think your thread is a little bit over the top to be honest.

We went with little Miss TheFair1973 when she was 4 weeks old and were made very welcome. This was in spite of little Miss TheFair1973 doinf her best to raise the place to the ground with her screaming!! Fastest I've ever drunk a pint of ale and ate a bag of pork scratchings!! You'll both be missed. Are you planning on another pub in Hertford then? Or is it all top secret for the time being?

well i'm pleased the Woodman is being taken over by a decent couple. It's a great location but everytime we've been in there, the miserable staff have made us feel less than welcome. We'll be stopping off again for a swift half during our weekend strolls!

Brilliant news - I love the Woodman because of its location and all the kiddy stuff in the garden, but the beer is often a bit of a let-down. That should change once dobbin gets the cellar sorted out.

Really pleased for both of you. Always been a favourite of mine even before I moved up to Hertford. Me and Mrs Sloop met in the bar of said hostelry about - well, a long time ago. We have a framed photo printed on canvas of Woodman taken about 1985/6 by one of the locals on our living room wall. The photo, not Mr Rogers. Pub all in white with famous bike on right hand wall. Dobbin should do wonders for the beer as well.

I'll visit you at The Woodman. It's a great place; an ideal, thirst inducing walk from Hertford with plenty of discreet bushes to visit on the way back. My son was induced on the garden swing there (full story on application).

Blimey! 12 months without a post about this place?? We popped in earlier this evening. The Abbot was excellent, as was the guest Old Trip. The "new" carpet looks great, the service was very friendly and we will definitely return to sample the next guest ale that we had a taster of ......
