This weekend 4/5 December
I thought you'd all like an update on this weekend and helps to answer a few comments on other threads. On Saturday the town centre should be heaving as usual charter market plus 30 stalls of Continental Market in Fore Street. Fire Brigade have 1960's style engine in Market Street and collecting for charity and Hoddesdon Sub Aqua Club have an exhibition in front of White Hart.
Highways out all day today putting in adapters to power the lights which should be installed Monday and Tuesday nights. Yes, Marilyn lights would appear to be better organised but sometimes not from where I was standing!!
Sunday - Market still in place. Shell fish, chestnuts, burgers and mulled wine in Salisbury Square along with Hertbeat fm who will be giving away goodie bags for kids. Then have WGC brass band doing carols etc from 3.00pm. McMullens dray leaves Castle at 4.00 with Mayor, escort, Father Christmas and others to arrive at 4.30pm. Mayor turns on lights on tree and hopefully town centre lights will come on. Also announce winners of hamper comp run by Hertbeat this week and town window display comp. Three cups - retail, commercial and pubs & restaurant which might explain why more shops look a little more festive than usual. BTW check out Old Barge - should be complete inside and out by mid week.

I hope you or others will be busy with a camera and post a crop on here, as unfortunatly for me I will miss the whole weekend due to work commitments! will be sure to take a look Sunday evening though. I hope it all goes well.

How about a forum competition for most original/unusual photograph of the event? Santa kicking back and smoking a fag in the dray, that kind of thing. Extra points for photos incorporating any of the Hertford "characters" as outlined on another thread on this forum.

Just to add another event going on over the week-end - there is also an arts & craft fair & Father Christmas grotto in Hertford Castle on both the Saturday & Sunday.
It's going to be a very festive weekend for the town!

Sloopjohnb, will there be any traffic changes to look out for in Hertford? I noticed the sign on Fore St. stating it'll be closed--will it just be part of the street or the whole thing? Will Folly Island traffic be diverted? Just want to be prepared. I'm really looking forward to this weekend and hope it's a huge success.

In particular to Elizabeth and generally elsewhere there has been a bit of a sea change at Police headquarters and at Council so road closures at an absolute minimum causing few diversion. Fore Street closed at iceland end except for traders, residents, deliveries, buses etc - mainly to allow access for emergency vehicles. But apart from that - everything as normal. BTW Elizabeth should have received Association letter by now. Wow! Ewoowar, green stars!!

Sorry Showstoppers is at Castle Hall, I should know the difference, we had that problem with the Wedding fare earlier in the year!!
I am sure I saw garlands accross Old Cross yesterday but they were gone this morning,please tell me it was not my imagination.
Also someone seems to have punctured the Woolpack santa, this morning the were reindeer but no santa, mind you I did see real deer in the wood opposite my wholesalers this moning and I am sure one of the was Rudolph!!

Great idea though it cost me! Just sampling the Normandy cider
5/5[:)] loved the Potato stuff at beginning of Fore Street.
I think the regular market will have benefitted too from, it seemed to me, an increase in shoppers/visitors
well done on a great idea

Wingnut.......hope the Normandy cider goes well with your visit to Lams later!
I didn't see the cider........I will check it out tomorrow.
I tried the potato stuff. Very good. I would have bought some too only I had bread, pate, olives, pain au chocalate for late lunch already. Besides......there's nowt much I can't do with a potato myself and it gave me some inspiration to get chopping this week.
When the last market came to town I was unable to visit it but I wondered about the impact upon the resident market. Having been to both today it was obvious that there was room for both.
There were definitely more people around town today.
And the Christmas tree fair at St Andrews church was good too. Worth a visit tomorrow for all those yet to see it.

Ewoowar..the cider /wine store wasn't there on Sunday shame[:D]
I reckon that our stallholders could learn a lesson here..the goods were not cheap however they were of good quality and were well displayed with a good variety..well done , but why should the 'mainland' show us how to sell good produce??

I suppose there is a difference between selling to your 'bread and butter' customers, week in, week out, and selling to new clientelle. You always make sure you are on top form if you are approaching a new customer.
Go to the new flower stall in Hertford. For me they are setting the standard.
