It's been a while since I played there, but they were VERY snooty when I last played there. I didn't think golf courses were still like that - especially over priced nine hole ones. If I was you I'd try Panshanger which is excellent and reasonably priced. You won't encounter golf club snobbery either.

Another good course, reasonably priced and with challenging though open fairways for getting your swing back is Ash Valley at Much Hadham. No buggies though when I last played there though very welcoming.

Chadwell Springs is on the site of the old East Herts Golf Club, which is now at Hamels Park in Puckeridge. They relocated about 30 years ago when the A10 bypass around Ware was built through the course. As a result, a new course and club, Chadwell Springs, started but there was only room left for nine holes. It may look hilly but in fact it's fairly flat once you get up onto the plateau where most of the holes are. There is a valley that cuts through the course which you will need to go through a couple of times but nothing too strenuous. The course is fairly open and as it is on chalk, it drains very well and is always playable during winter. The greens are renowned as some of the best around, being true and quick. I know a few members and don't think they are snooty at all, although I'm sure that all golf clubs have members who are snooty. I'm sure they would have at least a couple of buggies, since I think they have a very active seniors section. Your best bet is probably to pop into the pro shop and ask around. I think most golf clubs are desperate for members at the moment, so have a hack round each one, check the prices and choose which one is best for you. Others to consider: Panshanger - as above but can get very busy since it is a municipal course. An excellent course, none the less, well maintained and a good challenge. Ash Valley - as above. Relatively new, a bit too open and uninteresting for some. Great Hadham - new again but more challenging and with excellent facilities Brickedon Grange - Established members club with plenty of trees and some excellent holes. Expensive and probably tricky to get full membership. East Herts Golf Club - Puckeridge. Beautiful course in the grounds of Hamels Park, with many specimen trees and an excellent test of golf. Difficult to get membership. Whitehill GC - Open rolling farm land converted into a golf course around 15 years ago. Now a good test of golf with some very challenging holes. Excellent driving range and teaching professional. Hatfield London Country Club (Essendon) - two courses but the newer bottom course is better maintained. Worth a look but can be a strange atmosphere since the membership is mainly Japanese.
