I used to catch carp with casters (maggots in pupae stage) and some corned beef or tinned spam catapaulted out into the river and sweetcorn and boilees... The Crucian carp did appreciate my gourmet selection ....[:D]

The pearch was caught on lobworm and the same guy caught the same pearch again this week. Also lots of trout being caught below stansted lock through to rye house on bread/maggots or lobworm,1.5lb to 3.5lb. Thay escape from the Amwell Magna Fishery which joins the lee below stansted lock.

Perhaps some of the learned folk on this thread could give me some advice...my son (aged 4) has been badgering me to take him fishing since, well, the end of last summer really. Thing is, short of pulling out a few of those tasty signal crayfish with some bacon and a crab line, I know bugger all about fishing. Any advice on how I might get started with the little 'un? No idea of rods, bait, licenses or anything. And what would you recommend is the best approach with a youngster, who is most likely not going to be content to sit around for half a day without catching anything (I think he believes it will be rather like one of those magnetic fishing games at the fair).

Go to Argos if you are after a cheap rod kit. They start from 15 quid.

if you want a good place to take a learner then I recommend Rockells Farm in Dudenhoe End. Worth the drive(30-45mins?). Very easy to catch some nice fish. Lake bursting with carp 2-4lb mostly. Great fun. If there's one thing you don't want to do on your first trip is not catch anything! not fun! We have 2 great tackle shops locally that can help you with equipment. Johnson Ross in Hoddesdon and Pro Angling in Ware. I'm not sure about tuition though...I'll have a think.

Any tips on where the best places are to nab some crayfish locally?
Reply ID 74986
quote:Along the canal between The Barge and the canal basin is quite good; you need to be patient to start with as it seems to take a while for them to sniff out the bait, but they start coming eventually. We nabbed a batch on Sunday and cooked them up, unfortunately many of them are still pretty small this early in the summer.

Last time I went pike fishing here http://www.panoramio.com/photo/7825329 I caught about 15 signal crayfish. It was so bad that even fishing my bait about 0.5m off bottom they were still nicking my bait [:(!][:(!]

The Point - one of my favourite places in Hertford. I've always thought the area around the barge was best for crayfish and saw one the size of a small lobster up by the Dicker Mill bridge just recently.

A nice barbel was caught recently 13lb 9oz on the L.A.A stretch of the river lee(behind the football pitches on the meads).

I had a meager 10lb 2oz at Waterford 2 months ago, took half an hour to land and that was two of us. A long way off the record.

Bonjour!, it's been a while, I'm in the middle of renovating a house in France and it's taking up all my time. Fishing, I have discovered Westmill, they were super helpful dealing with a know nothing like me, they have everything an angler needs. It's a bit late in the day though, their millennium lake closes for the winter at the end of the month, they tell me that the fish are still biting and that my grandson will be sure to get his first bite. Hope this helps MoJo

Fishing a new stretch completely unknown and blind, as such, is one of the many joys of fishing in my opinion. Where's the skill in knowing where to fish, how, at what time and with what bait? In Asia they have commercial fish pools where many people sit around a small pond crammed with fish catching one after the other. It looks no fun at all. It took me around 10 years to get to really know the Lea that runs past Hertford Town FC. I could probably tell you all the best spots there, what tactics etc.. but that just spoils the fun [;)] Go fish enjoy, and if you dont catch, try, try and try again [:)] I'm going to start fishing the stretch of river mentioned by the bailliff, I dont expect to walk down and pull out good fish straight away, it might take many blank sessions to work out where the good fish are hiding out, its quite a long stretch, but thats fishing.

well just so you know i fished a little bit of the lea behind hertford the other night, its between hornsmill weir and riverside and drew a blanc big time! i was there for five hours but by the time it got down to minus 1 i1d had enough!! not a knock and i`d been baITING EVERY OTHER FOR A WEEK! i wish i could type and not keep hitting the caps lock button....... i`ve seen a couple of lovely fish there too, but i`m trying the little stretch tomorrow of the beane with my two boys, should be fun with an 8 year old daydreamer and a 3 year old monster....he`ll probably jump in and start hitting them with the pole!! heard there`s some graet smaller fish but if it joins into the lea there must be some really nice fish hiding away down there knowing its been a safe water for a long time. a fishing shop owner i know called `pete`, i`m sure some of you locals know him said L.A.A. used to run that side of the river but gave it up some years ago, spoke to the EA and they gave me a rep[ort on an electro fish survey they did not too long ago......VERY interesting guys and girls....

james i looked along the river up along waterford, but could not find any info on it.is there any stretches of water to fish or are they run by a club. most of the small stretches of waters around hertford are run by abbeycross or that other club.but you never see anyone fishing them. shame really, this could give the youngsters something to do.

The fishing rights on the river lee navigation are changing soon because the Lee Anglers Consortium are no more. Watch this space.
Reply ID 93629
Its all change on the River Lee Navigation this year, the fishing rights now belong to Hertford and Ware Angling because the Lee Anglers Consortium no longer exist. Thease fishing rights start at the Old barge pub on the folly in Hertford and run down stream to Feildes Weir in Hoddesdon but exclude a small stretch just before Rye House which belongs to the London Anglers Association. Hertford and Ware Angling are also hoping to gain control of Dobs Weir and down streem to Broxbourne (the crown). So unless you are a member of Hertford or Ware Angling club it will be a day ticket priced at £4.00 adult £2.00 concession.
