Would anyone care to recommend the best Indian restaurant in town?

The Shahenshah takes a lot of beating. I know its not Indian but I was very impressed on Friday night with the new Thai restaurant at what was the Three Tuns and latterly some Irish name that escapes me.

the raj on ware road, is the best. although i eat an indian meal once every 2 weeks, im not a real fan of the way these types of curry houses work. One large pan of universal curry sauce, with extras added to make it look, but not taste different.

Have you ever tried the "green chicken" from the "Raj"? It's lime- green and practically fluorescent! There's no way that one can have come from a one-pot curry. Tastes delicious, by the way. That swish new Indian restaurant at the Iceland end of Fore Street is taking ages to open up. They seem to be working on the outside now. I had a quick peek inside - its huge, very smart and airy. Not a square inch of flocked wallpaper to be seen. Wonder when that one is due to open?

yes new girl, ive tried it. what im saying is the majority of dishes are one pot sauces, but i do find the raj to be a general exception. Its gonna be an indian on fore st is it.??? Dont hertford have enuff of them???

As a big Indian food fan, even I think its becoming overkill with the amount of restaurants. I know its about supply and demand, but you can already tell some places are suffering. The Hot House is only half full at the weekends. Like NewGirl, I took a quick look in the new one coming in the old Munnings shop. It is Huge! They've knocked all the walls out, through two whole shop units. One of the existing businesses will have to fold. Hertford will soon have (inc takeaway) 7 choices of indian! By the way Steve, looks like you'll have to try them all, as everyone has a different favourite. My Fave is The Tikka Cottage. Small, but the best quality food. My least favourite is the Shahenshah, but that is due to the activity going on there. (If you don't know it, I'm not going to post it to ensure I don't get the site in trouble). I agree with David, the new Thai place is excellent. A little pricy, but 10 times better than the Thai Rack. I'm just hoping we get a Mexican joint soon, rather than yet more Indian and pasta.

First time on these forums but having tried all the Indians in town, but not the Raj because Ware road is too far to walk. However the Tikka is the best food and the best value. Only downside if you get next to a chain smoker on the next table it can be a bit smoky. Mexican would be a top idea. Rog

Went to the Hot House on Wednesday and foolishly took a table next to a couple of Jack The Lads who kept swearing, belching and taking repeated mobile phone calls.

Looks like the new Indian restaurant in Fore Street is getting ready to open. Having peeked through to the tasteful looking modern interior, I was expecting great things. However they have since painted the outside lurid PURPLE and put the sign up - "Bollywood". Images of pleasant nights in a sophisticated curry restaurant have instantly disappeared! I thought this was a listed building?

The colour and signs have not been approved by the District Council, who are aware of recent developments and will be pursuing the matter. Comments from the public are welcomed by the planning department as they give added "leaverage".

What is it with this town painting various buildings purple and orange and god knows what else. It must be quite confusing for the town's drug addicts though, who lets be honest see purple buildings every day of the week.

I am very intrigued to know what activities go on in the Shahenshah. Certainly not heating food, judging by the temperature of one recent meal I had there. would anyone like to enlighten me? They could send the reply to me offline. I'm relativley new to Hertford so keen to get the low down on all goings on.............
