I'm surprised I haven't seen anything on here about the 2008 Castle Street Party. I believe it is on Sunday 17th August from 12 noon. We have been to the last few and have always had a good time. So if you are looking for something to do next Sunday it is definitely worth taking a stroll down to Castle Street.

Blimey. Just got down the list to "must post about the street party"; logged on, and what do I see .. Thanks Ewoowar. Yes, this year's party is next Sunday, the 17th. I've ordered some sun and we have our usual eclectic set of attractions. Music will be provided by The New Improved Green Onions Sound Machine (starring DJ Lewis), and the Ebony majorettes will be strutting their stuff. There will be a number of stalls providing entertainment and games for children (and adults). Refreshments will include a barbecue (including home-made burgers), a variety of curries, and afternoon teas, and of course The White Horse will cater for other refreshment needs. This is a fundraiser for The National Deaf Children's Society so please come along and tell all your friends.

I have to say the forecast isn't too good for Sunday but we are making contingency plans (and it was like this last year). At the very least I would encourage people to come along and eat!! Hertford has it´s own micro-climate, everyone knows that. You never know what will happen weather wise until the day itself.

That's true, I know. It's just that I've had some unexpected bureaucratic expenses this year and I'm really concerned that the event isn't a financial disaster. I've had to take out exceptional public liability insurance in order that Hertfordshire Highways would sanction the road closure. If this happens again I will certainly think twice about holding the party at all. I want everybody to have a great time but more than that I want to be able to send money to the charity rather than to an insurance company. I am trying to be positive, really!!

Went for a short visit - couldn't stay too long as little_P wanted to send the Scalextric cars spinning off into the wall of the white horse [:I] Didn't see or smell the curry mentioned on the website - where were they? or were we too early?

Great day. Sun shone! Thanks for photos Admin. You were either too early or too late for the curries jez_p, they completely sold out. There was a nice atmosphere there, and fortunately the wet weather held off for the event. I had a lovely glass of elderberry wine from the White Horse, and a burger from the burger man.

For information - this is a copy of a letter to the editor of The Mercury. "Dear Sir, Thank you for your spread on the Castle Street Party (“Party fever grips the Castle Street crowd”, Mercury Aug 22). I would like, however, to point out two things? Firstly, the Castle Street Party is independent of The Castle. It just happens to be held in a nearby street. So the largest pictures in the piece (of the Castle and it’s brass band) had nothing to do with the street party and were somewhat confusing. Secondly, the money raised for The National Deaf Children’s Society (almost £2,000) would have been much more had not Hertfordshire Highways insisted on my having a minimum of ten million pounds of public liability insurance before they would sanction the road closure. This meant that, of the total of almost £2,300 raised, one fifth (£465) went to an insurance company and not to the charity. I am fully aware that I need public liability insurance when putting on a public event but the level of indemnity appears ludicrously high. Indeed, the insurance company, who specialize in one-off events, do not have a standard policy at that level, and had to calculate a premium separately. I was told unequivocally that there was no point in questioning this decision. I had to pay up this year but I wonder how Hertfordshire Highways justify this requirement. Have they done a risk assessment? They didn’t ask for one from me. And it is only poor little Castle Street after all. Yours faithfully,"
