Hi, the clan and i have been on a mission to find the best Sunday Roast in and around Hertford. So far The College Arms in Hertford Heath gets our vote for quality and best value for money! We also like The Five Horseshoes in Little Berkhamstead but it does sometimes tend to be lacking in er.... food. especially when they are busy. The Merchant House restaurant is overpriced and trying to do the 'posh but not a lot of nosh' thing. The Barge is completely tasteless but we appreciate it is not primarily a restaurant. Salisbury Hotel is tasty but again not a lot of food. Cowper Arms in Letty Green was very nice once it had been re-generated but apparently it has changed back to a deep frying roast potato food fayre? Codek2 on another thread recommends Galley Hall, we will be trying that soon cheers Codek2. Any other recommendations? ta [:p] [:)]

The Millstream in Port Vale is excellent, all locally sourced produce too.

sword in hand in westmill or the kick and dicky in wellpond green get my vote. slightly more than the average cost wise, but quality excellent.

Try the White Horse in Wareside - Danny does a mean roast dinner and they will cater for any dietry requirements. My fussy daughter loves the roast turkey - braughing sausagemeat stuffing and magnificent Yorkshire puds!

Gosh, I had to look up Wellpond Green as I've never heard of it [:I] The only place I've ever had Sunday Roast around here is the Feathers in Wadesmill who do a reasonable carvery, but I've since found the Toby Carvery in Watford is very good so always go there for a roast (obviously not a Hertford restaurant!). What a good thread, Richie. I'd be interested to see where I can get a superb roast more locally.

wellpond green just past standon. great pub, and even better food. I agree with the white horse in wareside. only problem is you can't book a table there.

Why is it that Hertford town itself has so few recomendations for Sunday lunch.. I have always been amazed at the low quality of pub food in Hertford. Seems there is a huge void between Brake Bros rubbish and the likes of Lussmans

Dare i say it? Wetherspoons.........£6.59 for a roast and a pint. Meat (we had chicken) was nice and lots of it. Shame about the 'fried' roast potatoes! Worth considering if you're a bit skint [^]

Personally speaking you can't do much better than The White Horse in Castle Street - 3 courses £8!!! Proper home made food just like mum used to do.

First off I should say this is publandlady! (Sorry admin, I'm a shocker for remembering passwords) Frenchie, I do feel I must defend us (The Old Barge), we eat our proper home cooked roast ourselves every sunday, nor would I ever miss it. Our Jax's makes the best roasties ever! I'm flabbergasted you found it tastless. Our joints of meat are deliverd fresh and roasted on the premises - in an oven, our veg is delivered daily, and both are from good local suppliers. I will admit we don't do our own yorkers, but as you say we're not a restaurant and our oven isn't that big! I assure you and all other readers that everything else is entirely home made and prepared, just like your Mum used to make it. I wouldn't even let brake bros on the island let alone onto my premises, but I reckon a certain so called 'free house' selling cheap chicken might! I'm really sorry if you had a bad experience maybe you'll give us another try one day, if you give us feedback in person, or more specifically, perhaps we can get to the bottom of it, did you have a cold that day? Any way Happy eating all - bit of a drive but the Toby at Buckhurst hill is good, Bald Faced Stag I believe it's called!

I havent been to the Barge for a while,it certainly sounds good. I think you are referring to Richie in your comments not me (tasteless/bad experience etc)! I often find that the presentation can be as big a let down as the food itself in too many pubs. I still believe the best roasts are found out of Hertford town itself and into the surronding villages where the business has to come to you and you cant rely on the attraction of the town itself.

Sorry Frenchie!, you're quite right I was referring to Richie. I do agree with your comment about the villages having to try harder, as they haven't the convieniance of passing trade, but we do try hard to offer something most town pubs don't - Good food!

Okay it was a while ago we tried the barge and it may be unfair as a comment on the standard of your roast at present. But my whole party found the food tasteless and we were not on a cold society day out! Yes we will come again.

Had Sunday lunch at the new restaurant on Paliament Square yesterday and it was very good. The pork was superb and the house wine very good value. Had a look downstairs and can't believe the difference, it even has natural light now !!! Hope the place gets the right crowd and not the same as before [:D] [:D]

Had a very good Sunday Roast at the Riverside Garden Centre this sunday, but still havn't found anyone in area to beat the White Horse at Wareside, never have room for a pudding.

we had a good roast at the barge about 3 weeks ago, and also millsteam is lovely for food - not had their roast but everything else there is wonderful....pink apple and honey crumble with ice cream...mmmm!

Been to the Tilbury at Datchworth a couple of times and thought their Sunday roast has always been very good - large portions too.

My vote goes to the Rose and Crown in Tewin. Locally sourced produce, good prices, great service. My second vote goes to the Prince of Wales in Hertingfordbury - the new lads up there are doing a fine job.
