New bike
I am thinking of getting a new bike, but not 100% sure what type/make to get. It would be for mainly road and a bit of (light) off road. I don't want to spend a fortune. I saw a Carrera Subway in Halfords for £199 which seemed good value - does anyone know if this is any good or have any more suggestions. Any advice much appreciated.

Ive found these people very helpful and good value, I am not a fan of anything sold in Halfords. We are very happy with our pair of hybrid Ridgeback bikes which were circa £220.

Try Freecycle (no pun intended). My friend got 2 bikes for her kids and 1 for herself for free!
Also ebay if you can be bothered throws up some bargains

Pop into Marshalls and have a chat with Rob.
They sell bikes across the spectrum and give good advice. They have shops in Hertford and WGC (near the QE2).
Or you could pop to Ware or Stevenage and visit Highway cycles who do likewise.
I've always found Marshalls more savvy than Highway cycles and Rob doesn't look down at you if you don't yet know what you want. Tell him what you want to do on a bike and he'll be up front with you.
Halfords sell good value bikes though they have a reputation for not training their Bike Hut staff too well.
