There was brown paper covering the windows when I walked past this morning and all of the tables and chairs had been removed. Hope it's just a refurbishment!

Worth saying something here in response to James. I am a bit too close to the people involved in both shops and would rather not say anything more. When I was Town Centre Manager I knew so much; something that was commented on at the last Community Voice by a Planning Officer. During that time many people trusted me with information about closing/opening shops and I respected that confidence to the point of remaining silent here and to other close colleagues. Sometimes I tried to dispel rumours on these boards. Sometimes it was better not to say anything. It is surprising if you were in my shoes to read these forums and wonder if you are actually in the same town. I have deliberately stayed out of things - best that way. One reason why I seldom post these days. I have had seven years of the rumour mill and although the underground is still active I am trying to concentrate on ressurrecting my previous career.

Had a couple from Alfies, one comment could do with more meat filling and slightly less pastry. Had some St Ives Cornwall recently, great and had to bring a dozen home with me stil wading through for next few weeks.

Proper cornish pasties? does that mean Alfies isn't doing proper cornish pasties? I've tried a lot of pasties in my time (waistline to prove it) and have nerver found a proper pastie except in cornwall.

I think I read somewhere that Cornish pasties have to be made in Cornwall like champagne can only be made in the champagne region. Some sort of European ruling. So these will be the real McCoy.

Alfie's does the real McCoy as well. They have them made and delivered from Cornwall. Best pasty shop, has to be the yellow river cafe in St.Ives...I can taste them already!

I agree on the shop in St Ives, Tintadgel also good. Was dissapointed with alfies last time i tried one, a bit lacking in meat and pastry too thick, but will try them again and will try the new one where doorsteps was. will report back.

I am also gutted, it was the ONLY decent place to get a pick-what-you-like sandwich in Hertford after the Greenhouse Cafe closed a few years ago. Do we know why it closed, was it not making money? It was one of the few remaining reasons I occassionally ventured into Hertford town. I can see myself going there hardly at all as time goes by. I wish I thought differently, but other towns have far more to offer at usually at a better price.

plenty of other places in Hertford to get Sandwiches, i use the natural health shop always fresh and choice good get there early as go fast, healthy too many without added mayo and salt etc like a lot of pr-packed sandwiches (waitrose and M&S worst for high salt content) Always found doorsteps ok, better after the smoking ban came in as my baguette always had a slight smokyness to it.
