The last recession - Early 90s
Can anyone find any retail/shopping premises that are still independently owned by the same people since the last recession?
I can only think of Gays and Jenners in Fore Street and Paul Martin in Maidenhead Street, although I may be wrong with those.

Stuart Davidson Opticians? Hertford Cameras? Wiggintons? The Health food place near the library (Not sure about that one but it's been there for as long as I can remember ...)
Depending on your definition of "retail", there's also Powell's Undertakers in Railway Street!

Botsfords in Parliament Sq, Sykes jewelers in Bircherley Green (it moved premises but it's been in the town for many years), picture/framing shop in Fore Street, Beckwiths and the smaller antiques shop in St Andrew Street, East Herts Electricals in Market Place, off-license in Parliament Sq, Drury Brothers in Maidenhead Street, florists in the Wash, stationers/printers in The Wash.

The hardware shop in Parliament Square, next to the antique book shop. I bought my first full set of tools there in 1964

Powells is no longer family owned................they were bought out last year although the some of the family are still involved

If you count them probably Hairdressers / barbers certainly Headlines in The Avenue Bengeo

Hertfordshire Graphics, the proper art shop in St Andrew Street, were originally in ware but came to hertford in early 90's independantly owned by same owner and been going as a business 25 years.

Whilst researching something completely different I came accross a Mercury special edition from July 1983. Here are some names advertising which are still here:
Gays, Empire Take-away, The Bouquet, Cooper Signs, McMullens, Hertford Picture Framing and Sykes.
But here are sone blasts from the past that sadly are not here anymore:
Simple Simon (cards), Wah Yeun, Christines, Hertford Hire Service, Addis, Biffin (childrens wear), Gravesons, Norris, Hertford Tile Centre, Curtain Trends, Perrys (fruit & veg), Munnings, Baxters (butchers), Parkins (butchers), Norris & Duvall (surveyors), Something Old (antiques), Bob Hill and last but not least John Barber [?][;)]
Interestingly both the butchers and the greengrocers were all in Railway Street; and one more to add to the list of everpresents - Hertfordshire Mercury.

I am afraid it is the cost of having supermarkets, very few towns still have butchers/ bakers/ greengrocers/ fidhmongers etc as permanent residents just on markets days.
