Hatfield Tunnel Closures for Two Years
Bad news from next summer for any Hertford commuters who have to travel via the Hatfield area.

what a waste of time. I'm sorry but to close a major motorway section for 2 years just to make emergency exits compliant with disability laws is a joke. I'm sure someone would carry anyone through a door they couldn't reach if there was an emergency

They only finished the roundabout and A414 sliproads on top of the bridge a year or so ago and that caused abject misery.

Hatfield tunnel, like Bell Common and Holmsdale, have come to the end of their lives in terms of fixtures and fittings. Like most motorways, they have a life span which has been reached. Twenty years of traffic fumes does more damage then you can believe.
As a result of the Mont Blanc tunnel fire, all tunnels across Europe will be upgraded to the latest standards.
Believe me, the Higways Agency would not be spending this money unless they had too.
Holmsdale tunnel was completed early, and to be honest the flow of traffic was better during the works then before it.
Work has now started on Bell Common tunnel.

I've just read the article, and to be honest, they've dramatised it as it won't be that bad. If they follow form there should still be 3 lanes running in each direction during the duration of the works.

You obviously didnt suffer the A414 being used as an M25 Bypass during those roadworks.

errrr I live just off the A414, and I can with hand on heart say that the number of motorists tthat used in in lieu of the M25 was minimal if any. I'll see if I can get hold of the traffic flow figures, before during and after.
The time and distance from junction 23 to junction 25 via the A1(M),A414 and A10 is huge in comparison to jcts 23 to 25 directly
