MacDonalds - Petition to open in town.

Hello all I'm getting tired of having to go all the way up to the A10 roundabout for a burger (well actually more of a sausage and egg McMuffin). Anyone else feel that we should petition Mac D's to open back up in town? I would be good for jobs and would give the local kids somewhere to congregate rather than just here and there an although I can appreciate that some people think their bad, the more money that's flowing through the town centre the better. I'd really like a Burger King (superior food), but I can't see that happening. The DB

It is a bit too early for April's Fool day. I'm serious. I would like a MDs in town. I don't see what people have against them. They don't force people to go there and get fat and they employ people. Also, like a bit of a dirty burger now and then, sorry. And Subways is seriously rough. The DB

A shameless, deplorable and morally corrupt company which was generally not missed when it shut in Hertford.

I'm afraid you've really hit the wrong forum to suggest such a thing! However, they've been here, it didnt work. what makes you think it would work now? nothing has changed. Dont give up though - the people on here are far from representative of typical hertford folk. Just find a different place to start your campaign!

Codek2 Thank you for the first decent reply. All, what is the point in having a forum made up of people who all think that same and all agree with each other? I think this is the ideal place to get a debate up, where else can I go to talk to people who live in Hertford and take a real interest so easily? I think it's the snobbish attitudes evident in this post that drove MDs out of town. Does it affect all of your middle class sensibilities? Do you find large numbers of 'chavs' enjoying themselves disturbing? Or is the thought of 'those people' having a nice big Tesco and MD to keep them happy too much for you all? BRING BACK BIG MACS TO HERTFORD TOWN CENTRE! The DB

What snobbish atitudes? You're the one to bring class into the debate by sounding like an inverted snob! MacDonalds's weren't "driven out of town" by anyone, it simply wasn't a viable business - market forces. I'd agree with previous posters who'd prefer a Burger King.

Thirded! Unfortunately it's "The Fine Burger Company" in the Galleria, nowhere near as good as GBK. I would happily sign a petition NOT to have a McDonalds open in Hertford Town Centre again,. ps. Although I'd kill for a Hertford Nandos.

So, loads of you would like a Bugger King, but not a MDs, this totally smacks of a class war in Hertford. It's blatant that people who go to BK look down on those who go to MD, just the way you all probably look down on those who go to Tesco. I personally love MD and love Tesco. This place is so narrow minded, if I knew where any of you lived I'd come round and shove a mouldy burger through your doors. The DB

The standards of literacy on this thread just about defines the average burger eater. Does nobody any longer know the difference between "their" and "there" or "to" and "too"? Yes, I know that I am a pedant, but does no-one else have any standards anymore?

Of course, you forgot to mention that grammatically, McDonalds is a company and is therefore singular, so their burgers is wrong too; it should be its burgers – note, not it's burgers, it's possessive but with its and it's, its is the only possessive plural that doesn't have an apostrophe, because it's refers to it is. Now that's pedantic... ;) But anyway, I'm partial to a McDonalds every so often; there is nothing like its Double Cheeseburger and Chicken Nuggets. That said, I'm glad it's at the other end of town to where I live. I get the impression I'd maybe weigh a stone or two more than what I do now if it was in the centre of town.[:D]

Not necessarily a GOURMET burger, but one with some traces of food in it would be a good start. Interestingly, that's why they started making polystyrene boxes yellow - so the customers could tell which part they should eat. [;)]

Closing Maidenhead St branch of MD was a business decision taken by the franchise holder as it was not as profitable as the A10 franchise, which he also owns. If a successful businessman (ie: still bringing in money) makes the decision to close one of his own branches, I'd be surprised if anyone else would try and open a new franchise (how much do these cost for MD? £100k?) in a spot where it has already failed. Subway's mission is to open as close to their oppo as possible, hence their location. Personally, I wouldn't feed my cats MD food as it is IMHO plastic and horrible.

I would like to see some fast-food place open in town to provide competition to subway. I had some firends visit on Thursday night for a charity quiz we ran at Elberts. They had come up on the train from South London and were starving when I picked them up at the station. She really wanted a burger (no arguing with a pregnant woman!) but the only place she could go was Wetherspoons, as she obviously wanted to sit and eat. It would make perfect sense for a fast-food chain to open in the old Maccy D's building. Lets face it, nothing else is in there and has been for quite some time.

The Maidenhead Street McDonalds was ok if you happened to be out and about in the town for a period long enough to get hungry, or maybe local working people's lunch breaks etc., but if you just want to quickly pop out to get yourself or the kids something, it's not as attractive as the one on the A10 as there's nowhere to park nearby. I can't believe that Hertford town centre attracts people who go shopping for long periods at a time, or come very far (from home) to do it, I think most shoppers would just wait until they got home or go somewhere else. Maybe the place is busy with kids on a Saturday, but I never saw it very busy on weekday mornings and afternoons, or any evenings. If that's so then I'm not surprised it wouldn't be profitable. I wouldn't at all interested in McDonalds returning to the town, not in the previous location anyway. At least one can walk up and down Maidenhead Street these days without having to constantly look over one's shoulder for cars coming from either direction, parking up and blocking the path, and even access to ATMs.

You could also have got a burger and fries in The Stone House up to 8.00 pm (Better quality that the Wetherspoons one's IMHO) or they do some mean burgers in The Old Barge. They're more expensive but well worth the extra.

You are all missing the point. The fact is that Hertford's a second rate town without a central McDonald's. All the other places I go on a regular basis, Nuneaton, Wroxham and North Finchley all have MDs and are better places than Hertford for it. Hertford is behind the times. You all think it's quaint with local shops (that VASTLY overcharge for their products - details upon request)but the reality is it's boring and doesn't provide a full shopping experience. I mean, go to the Stonehouse for a bugger? Does that mean I also have to put on a mini skirt and freeze my bony ass off shivering outside to get in then leave with chlamydia, just for a burger? Some of you have got it right that MDs is good for a dirty bugger but most of you are just plain wrong. Trying to deflect the snottiness that rules here with a 'joke' concerning grammar is just typical wrapped up in your own existence and happy little forum behaviour. There is nothing wrong with Tesco. If you shop at Waitrose you pay through the nose so you can feel a bit superior, go on deny it, look deep inside, you know it's true. But your getting buttf**ked for the pleasure by Waitrose who take your money and would be just like Tesco if they were top of the pile. I am not this RGsrick person. I am The DB and I rule. You are all weak and I bet if MDs did open you wouldn't be able to resist the filth. The DB

Perhaps not every other high street, but certainly some of the more successful ones, and yes we do need some of the chain stores. Perhaps the old McDonalds building was too big and expesive - it was huge by McD standards. Perhaps a smaller McDs would be viable as part of a more thriving shopping centre.

The DB is back on to settle the matter. Okay re overcharging. Now, you may find this strange but I don't want to cause the shop that I think overcharges trouble so I will try and be subtle: About a year ago I went into our MD-less town centre to purchase a lens from a certain shop. Now, I had been on-line and seen the prices for the the lens I wanted but thought; I'm going to support local business and see what town can do, I don't mind paying a bit extra for face to face service and peace of mind. In the shop I asked how much the lens was. I was told a price £80 over the cost of the (reputable internet (some purely internet, others with physical shops as well) stores)). I said (very politely and not at all in a presumptive manner) that I appreciate they could not match the internet prices but was there anything they could do. I was told that that was the final price and they lost the £300-£400 that was burning a hole in my pocket. Now, I really wanted to buy the lens from them, really wanted to have a good relationship with my local shop and buy all my gear (which is a steadily growing pile of expensive kit) from them. I would have been happy with £10 off the price as a gesture to our possible relationship. I walked out of the shop and the times I have been back have been constantly shocked by their prices. I went over to WGC and got the lens from a shop for £30 above the internet price. Don't even tell me there wasn't any wiggle room. Case closed, The DB has spoken. Wallop.

This topic has aroused strong feelings on both sides of the debate, and I think it's important we get things in perspective. What we see here are the opening salvos of the final battle for the soul of our little town. Parallels with the Book of Revelation, or with the slow but inevitable collapse of Rome in the face of the Barbarian onslaught might be overstating it. But you see my point. The lines are being drawn. On one side we have this D8 creature and his allies, probably hooded, almost certainly drunk on Tesco Value lager and, if they get their way, clutching a half-eaten bacon double-cheeseburger (the wrapper for which has long been cast away on the pavement outside Woolworth). Facing them are the others, neatly dressed, quietly determined, and knowing the importance of grammar and a healthy diet, a jar of Waitrose pickled cabbage by their sides. It's time to take sides everyone.

I suspect you're right. Even she will know that McDs is a sinister organisation who's burgers are made of rubbish and taste like rubbish. Grown-ups don't like them and they make you ill. We need a McDs like we need an open sewer in the town centre. Good game though DB!

Why not go to Lussamann's for a burger or the burger van by the roundabout that appears on a friday/sat night.

Oh my - now what does go into the burger van burgers? Not sure it's even meat!! McDonald's use only the best beef from Irish and English beef cattle - from the forequarter. They do not put any additives in the meat, just cooked with a pinch of salt for flavour. You can ask to view the kitchens and the cooking process at any store and the manager should allow you, give notice and that it's not too busy. McDonald's hasn't got to be as big and as profitable as it is by selling junk

I don't think The DB would mind that either. In the thread about the proliferation of canine crap in Railway Street she commented...

Steve your talking out of your poo hole. That was a blatant attempt to wind people up. This post is serious. The DB

Not sure what the burgers are like at the Six Templers but I think they are preferable to a McDs in the town centre. It might be snobbery but there is nothing wrong in wanting to protect where you live.

Andy L - that has to be one of the best posts that I have read on this site, superb! I am with the Waitrose brigade. The DB - I used to go and buy a burger from Neal's (horsemeat) Van on Bull Plain. It's perfectly edible, tastes surprisingly ok and has had given me no problems. Mooooooooooooooo!

You guys were missing the point in my earlier post about friends wanting a burger on THURSDAY night (an therefore ruling out the Bull Plain van, if it's only there on Fri/Sat night). I know there are loads of places to get a burger in town, most, if not all of them better than Wetherspoons. But, I bet none of them can go from ordering to serving as quick as Wetherspoons, which was the whole point of wanting a fast food outlet with seating.

That's the first time I've heard the service in Wetherspoons descibed as speedy.

Try Neil's Meals on Wheels, in Bull Plain on Saturdays. Never eaten there myself, but it always has a queue and may be the armistice we are looking for.

Only on Saturdays when the market is open. That's quite limited.
