New card shop
I see lots of greetings cards and displays are being moved into the recently refurbished shop on the corner of South Street and Fore Street (adjacent to The Sportsman, used to be insurance broker).

Well I guess there's not much of a market for second hand cards...
Reminds me of a funny story - I told my (then) three year old son we were going to post a "Congratulations on Your New Baby" card to a neighbour and he asked what had happened to the old one!!!

Interested to know if it is a card shop, not sure how well it will do on that corner if Birthdays could make a go if it on a corner with more passing custom. I guess they hope M&S will help.

presumably it's a short term let and they'll close in january - like the calendar shop that was near waitrose for about 2 months!

I was delighted to see the unit occupied because - as Marilyn says - it's not a good location.
The calendar (and fireworks) shops are seasonal. Cards are not (there's always one season or another for card shops!)

because it's the run up to christmas, they will sell all the christmas tat, make a quick buck and then close. It's what these shops do. Of course it's not a good location, so therefore they havent got a chance of surviving long term.

Now that the council tax is levied even on empty properties at the full rate I think the landlord has probably decided that by letting it on a short term lease, or to a charity shop it is a good idea as he is then not liable for the tax. In the former case the tenant will pay the substantial council tax and in the latter, charity shops are exempt, and so it is a win win situation for the landlord, as he can still keep the premises on the market without having to pay the monthly council tax. This is purely supposition.

You could be correct if it is a short let they will only have 3 months without having to pay again unless they find another tenant, I often wonder who pays on shops like the one in St Andrews street that has been empty years.
