Waitrose Sales Up
Good to see that despite all the doom and gloom of the credit crunch, sales at Waitrose are up...

Are you going to post the good news that Tesco sales are up to???? Particularly as they are Hertfordshire based.

Indeed, most of the supermarkets have reported good results recently, although Tesco is one of the smallest at just 2.5% (somewhat less than Waitrose's 41%). Sainsburys' have reported 4.5% and Morrisons 8.9%.
What I find interesting about Waitrose is the fact that sales have grown by such a large amount, especially given that they are not always the cheapest.

Interestingly, we did a small shop at Waitrose 2 weeks ago and then did the same shop at Tesco last weekend and Waitrose came out cheaper!
We couldn't believe it.

Not specific to Waitrose, but this is something I've noticed for some time. In comparison to Tesco (before Tesco's PR man, Dude jumps on me, I use Tesco as the example only because it is currently Hertford's only bulk retailer) I have found my shop consistently cheaper elsewhere and usually better quality. Large retailers use statistics to compare prices and they obviously pick the result which most favours them. Asda and Tesco both trade meaningless figures against each other. Niether claim is entirely accurate, due to what is carefully omitted.

No I'm not. It wasn't a massive price difference but was about £3/4 cheaper, which surprised us both.
I have to say I agree with Shunt. I know we are in a 'Credit Crunch' but we've noticed in the last few weeks/months that our bill at Tesco has risen each week and we are buying the same things.

Bubba - I agree that Tesco prices have gone up (weekly shop now tops £100 most weeks - it never used to). However, Waitrose is a different kettle of fish. Pop in there for a couple of bits and you are easily £20 lighter.

You can't compare Tesco and Waitrose like that as the figures for Waitrose is for just one week and the figures for Tesco are for a 7 week period. I think that you will find that most retailers were very quiet on the run up to Christmas and then had a very busy final week
