I have just been watching on the web cam on here the view from Parliament Square and have noticed a number of cars heading towards the camera from the town, I am sure that there is a no entry sign up that they are coming through?

hmmmm what an interesting life you lead!

Yep just a bit bored, just checking about all these cars that seem to be breaking the law and no one bats an eye lid!

If they are heading towards the camera then they are travelling the right way, as the camera looks towards Parliament Square

Hi D.K. are you sure, I thought it pointed the other way into town towards the banks?

However there are a fair number of drivers who do drive the wrong way down this stretch of road. I know of one who does it as a matter of course.

i did see them pull up a white van man about 6 months ago for driving through it and ignoring the sign. Pretty jobsworthy I thought, especially seeing as there was no traffic coming the other way, but I suppose if everyone ignored road signs, there would be anarchy

Bengeo residents should be banned from parking in the streets to free them up for through traffic. They could just dig in to the hill and build an underground carpark for them all to park their BMW X5's.

Fantasy, I'd say, but there's a few that give it a go. More annoying are the idiots who think the two give way stop lines (outside Hertford House and opposite Fordham's) are parking bays.[V]

quote:Pretty sure there is a road sign on the wall of Shire Hall, white arrow on blue background, indicating that traffic may only go right on exiting Church St. Think there is a "right turn" arrow painted on the road surface as well. There is certainly a "No left turn" sign and "right turn" arrow for vehicles exiting Bell Lane

quote:Just in case I've got the names backwards, looking from the webcam, exiting the road in the foreground (Bell Lane?), you must turn right as per the sign opposite. From the second road (church St?), you may turn right or left. That's assuming no recent changes.

Isn't the second road called Bell Lane? Also, I might be wrong but I am sure that on exit, outside Millets there is a blue and white 'right turn only' sign? [?]

quote:I think you are right, even though the first is the one next to The Bell. There is no sign though, nor has been since this road system was introduced, unless one has been added in the last six months. Notice of the change would also have to have been given to change the priorities, as it was when Market Place was removed from use.

The One Way sign is only opposite Church Street. It is fine to go either way out of Bell lane. (Google maps have got the one way direction completely wrong.)

There's nothing stopping you from doing a turn in the road if it's clear and safe to do so, and leaving via parliament square. So long as you haven't reached the sign on the court wall.

Thanks for that Buzz. Rather more useful. When I looked (admittedly a very long time ago) there was no arrow on the road. It's possible the sign was there and I missed it by not looking up (it is rather oddly positioned) and I didn't make a point of walking all the way down Bell Lane to look, merely standing at the junction in the position a car waiting to exit would. The arrow definately was not there then. That would adequately explain the three vehicles in a row I saw turning left on that day. You'd need to be in an LGV to see that sign through a windscreen, always assuming it was there then, or read it from 50yrds back.

Just submit Shunt. You have lost this time. Accept it. Everyone knows that you can't turn left out of both junctions, ever since we all passed our tests, it has been the case. Just congrat Buzz on having the balls to bother to take a photo. Go and talk to that night bird thing on the 'I can block a road if I want to' thread. Either that or wait for the Sainsbury one which will start again soon no doubt.

The problem is, if one is fairly careful, like myself, some take an enormous delight in the odd occasion that a slip occurs and expect..... What? I am not the type who'd claim to never be wrong. Are you always right? Is anyone on here? I was not aware there was a prize or that a competition was in progress. This particular error came about because, a few years back I found myself waiting for a small row of oncoming traffic from this turning. I was amazed to find that there appeared to be no obvious directions to prevent that manouver at that time. The road marking was definitely not there, and (as I said) I probably missed the sign, not really the type to spend too much time on trivia until it becomes necessary (such as approaching the turn in a car). By the way, this may not have changed since you passed your test, but the priorities have changed at least six times in this section of town, since I passed mine.

quote:I don't know how long the sign has been there, and I agree that it is not very conspicuous. Waste of time pointing this out to Highways though. It has long been my contention that this stretch of road should be an exit from the town for all vehicles, i.e. from the Shire Hall towards Parliament Square. I appreciate, that, at peak times it would be inconvenient for buses, which would have to enter the town via Gascoyne Way, but in the end everyone would benefit as we would not have the routine "mexican stand-off" between impatient drivers ignoring the "Give Way" lines outside the Shire Hall, and the buses trying to get through. Still, we must know our place and acknowledge that the Planners controlled by our Lords & Masters know best.

There was quite a funny stand off there a couple of weeks ago when one driver who had the right of way just turned his engine off and proceeded to read his paper. I had to get off my bike and watch. Outcome; Five minutes later the driver in the wrong was persuaded to move by other drivers who getting extremely angry [:D]
