Unidentified bird at Waterford Marsh:
Hello all.[:)]
Whilst on my morning constitutional this Sunday over at Waterford Marsh (it was quite stunning with a covering of frost), I spotted what I would describe as a small heron type bird.
Does anyone know any better with regard the species of this bird? Have other people spotted it?
It had slight grey plumage on its front and was certainly much smaller than a heron (perhaps more than half the size of a full grown heron). Also, from a quick Google search on birds of this type it didn't seem to fit the egret look (i.e Cattle Egret).
I look forward to a better informed response!
I think I may have also seen a Snipe.

Many thanks for the response.
Having done a bit more searching a Night-Heron looks much more like the bird I spotted - size and colouring.
Is this wishful thinking as I understand they may be relatively rare?
Whatever the case I'm back there next weekend to get a better look.
