Thursday nights in Cowbridge

It seems that every thursday night there is some sort of youth club or whatever at a local (Methodist??) church in Cowbridge. It is absolutely murder from 9pm onwards. Kids outside all night shouting and swearing. If you have read my posts before you will know that all the car tyres were slashed at ours on a thursday night, my brake cables were cut, we have had bikes stolen and this week I opened my window and saw a gang of young males on scooters (no engines) running around our carpark using it as a practice area. This youth club or whatever it is is really beginning to get on my nerves, Can we get more police presence in the area on Thursdays?

Now now. Let's not jump to conclusions. Before moving down here, I used to be involved in a live music night... we used to get a huge amount of complaints because of rowdy behaviour outside the venue. The problem was a lot of kids where apparently telling their parents that they were going to our event and then getting wasted outside, by the canal near the venue. Was our problem? Yes and no. We couldn't do nothing about the kids outside the venue – we had to work closely with the police who were understanding of the situation, and grateful we were hosting a night for kids to get the off the streets. Getting police involved is the first step but the major problem is that they can only move them on that night. If the ones causing trouble are using the youth club as a pretence for being able to be outside unsupervised, then they'll be back week after week. The problem is by shutting down the youth club, you're punishing the well behaved youths inside the club because of the actions of the little s**ts outside it who are probably using the night as excuse to get out in the evening no questioned asked.

Did you contact the parents Brockman?

I don't want to shut down any events at all or ruin things for anyone, I simply want to be able to enjoy living where I live free from vandalism and trespassing. It is not a great deal to ask. The youths I have seen are the same ones coming and going from what I believe is a youth club. I don't ask for the youth club to control them more, I just want the police to be aware that their presence is needed on thursdays to make sure everyone is happy. I am all for youth clubs and so on, I think they are a great idea fif they take kids off of the streets and getting them to interact socially. I don't like being awake until the early hours on thursday nights because they are playing up. Had I caught the person cutting the brake cables on my bike then I would have wrapped the bike around his head! End of!

Of course. Why should we all pander to the belief that these kids can get away with it. If it's a Youth Club then the parents must know where the kids are? THEY ARE ACCOUNTABLE! Grow some balls JohnSmith and face the problem AND the cause.

James, read what Brockman wrote. The kids causing the problems were OUTSIDE the youth club. I can just imagine you going up to a group of drunken teenagers and saying: "you uncouth lot, tell me where you live so that I can inform your parents what you are up to". I think you will find that it is the police's job, not some vigilante's.

I don't see how you can contact the parents? They may, or (more probably) may not have anything formal to do with what's going on inside. Perhaps I'm missing something but surely if a kid is going to do something naughty or illegal, they're unlikely to tell their parents where they're going to be while it's going on?

Back to the original post. Manaton, have you contacted the police? If it's a regular event I'm sure they would be happy to have a presence there for a few weeks. It should calm down after that.

I'm not sure on what the situation with the youth club is – we were pay on the door or tickets ahead of event so there was no way to track the attendees in terms of where people live etc. It may be different with the youth club. I agree with you about the kids being dealt with. As far as my experience went, they ruined the event. Unfortunately, the only way they can be dealt with is by parents, as James said. The only problem, is that if there is no record of the parents, then there is nothing that they can do.

It doesn't make any difference. Challenge the kids and the youth club organisers and they will soon give information. Target the 'big mouth' in the group and speak to the people that run the club. You'll find out who the parents are soon enough. Take it further and don't give up!!!

Woah, hold on a minute James. You are treading on dodgy ground here. In this day and age you don't do things like that. Try living in the 2000s and not the 1950s. I wouldn't challenge ANYONE unless I was in a stab proof jacket standing behind a couple of policemen. It is the police's job to sort out public order and I don't think they would be too happy with you giving out advice like this.

The whole reason why society is going the way it is. Daily Mail-ism. You are well within your rights to challenge any one person or group who is challenging you, be-it by noise, smell or violence. I am not suggesting violence or some sort of vigilante stance, just questions. You are within your rights to ask questions to both kids and the people that run the club. Names will be provided, parents names too. [:)]

You can believe what you want but my advice to Manaton would be to call the police every Thursday and if it doesn't calm down, contact a local councillor and ask them to meet a senior police officer with you.

Also, speak with the youth club organisers. They'll most likely understand the situation.

Yet again another thursday night and another racket, fighting, screaming, showing and bottles smashing in Cowbridge. The Police have been called and are looking into it.

Sadly, there is a world of difference between the Police "Looking into it" and the Police "Being there."

Sending officers to deal with an incident as it is taking place as opposed to taking details after the event. Manaton said that the police were looking into it - he didn't specifically say that the police were in attendance.

What time did this occur? I wondered into town at about 10:00 p.m. and although there was a collection of youths they were perfectly polite and obliging when I asked them to step aside to let me through. Returning at about 11:30 p.m. it was all quite.

James is absolutely right. The whole issue of people challenging other people with smells is completely out of control in Hertford. Just the other day i saw / smelt some youths hanging around Bircherley green challenging people with Smells. I almost challenged them, but was scared that I would be subjected to further smells. The fear that prevented me from challenging them is a direct result of my having once read the Daily Mail.

I went past the Church (United Reformed) next to the former Bob Hill's motorbikes at 10.15 pm last night. There was an awful lot of kids, but not really a problem, just a bit boisterous (defintely older teens, but shouldn't their parents know where they are????) The car in front of mine, for no reason, beeped his horn and some of the lads geered and gestured, but not sure if it was a friend of theirs as he pulled over and appeared to return to the group! I am more concerned they spill out onto the road and the streets are narrow with parked cars, you don't always get the option to swerve out of their way. If they are part of a youth group, could not the leaders keep them indoors until the group finishes and stay outside with them to make sure they are all ok??????
