Hope that this topic is OK for a Hertford forum! Other half and I are considering moving to one of the surrounding villages in tne next year or so (Bayford, Staines Green, Cole Green, Brickendon etc...). However, I have no idea which are the nicer ones or if a giant bypass is likely to be built near any of them in the next 15 years. Any opinions?

Stains Green, Cole Green, already have a newish by pass, so not fear there, lovely properties around that area.

It all depends what you want from a village. For example Waterford has no shop or pub, so you have to have a car to buy a pint of milk or beer ;-) Bayford DOES have a pub, but also a thundering railway line going through with trains approx every 20 minutes or possibly more. All the villages surrounding hertford are beautiful, however remember that some are more accessible during bad weather than others. , ie the road from Brickendon, little berkhampstead or bayford down to the lower Hatfield road can be absolutely treacherous in the snow and or the dark, yet they are picture postcard for beauty! If it were me choosing a village to live then it would be Tewin or Daytchworth. Beautiful, quiet, a shop, 2 pubs, and easy access to either Hertford, Stevenage or WGC whatever the weather!

Datchworth looks nice, but is a little like living in a suburb of Stevenage. The big houses you see on the green are occupied by a very small proportion of the population, who mainly live on the big estate hidden round the back of the village. This creates an uncomfortable mix of ex-coppers, Freemasons and Tarmac gangs (most of whom share one surname). Every weekend the village is invaded by visitors to the local Rugby club, their cars and children, which is the original source of the ex-coppers (the Met team was based there). I found it an unfriendly and threatening place to live. Think 'Wicker Man' and you're about there.

Watton at Stone is a great village, 3 pubs, post office, butcher, baker, hairdresser, supermarket, and 2 Churches, 5 miles from Hertford and Stevenage, with a railway line to London.

Interesting , shunt!! Never heard the ''tarmac gang'' expression before [:)] Hugh, I owned a house in Watton High street and I agree on the face of it , it seems ideal, but there is an element (tarmac gang?) possibly.....that invades the village,and fills one sometimes 2 of the pubs! Also ''supermarket'' is stretching it a little bit lol...waaaay overpriced asian corner shop is probably closer to the truth. However I agree..it's a nicely positioned village, not as picturesque as most but handy if one wants to be close to civilisation!![:D]

I live in Widford and it's lovely. Great little village, no shop but a pub and only 10 minutes drive to Ware/Hertford/Harlow/Stortford via pretty lanes. Village shop in Much Hadham (aka Harrods) or Hunsdon are very handy. Petrol stations in both villages too. You get more for your money in the villages, a sense of community and fresh air and no light pollution - great for star gazing [:D]

The Hadhams are lovely villages. Much Hadham is quite a size, with great pubs, village shop and a fantastic school. Little Hadham is just as friendly, but a bit smaller and no shop! Don't make the mistake a lot of people make of moving to the villages from being very close to Hertford town centre and then hating the journey to shops etc. We love village life and wouldn't swap it for the convenience of a walk into town - but it's horses for courses [:D]

Lovely villages but very busy getting in and out at rush hour times. Much Hadham in particular as cars are parked through the village making it one lane in places, can cause quite a bit of traffic. Great place to live though

Picking a village very much depends on your life balance. what would you need? Shop / no shop. Pub / no pub etc etc. How far is "popping in" to town? Places like Standon or Wareside are only a 10 minute drive away (except in rush hour) so its easy to live there and pop in when you feel like it. Also a biggy to consider... Don't pick a village on the opposite side of Hertford to your place of work. The nightmare of Hertford in rush hour will triple your journey time. Years ago, I worked in WGC, but rented in Waterford - Ten minute drive. But when I rented in Hertford Heath (4 miles further), my journey could take 40 minutes on a bad day, particuarly coming home.

Not sure what it is like to live in but the main road through gets jam packed at rush hour, and it is congested pretty much all day. If there is a problem with the A1 as there was yesterday it is best not to even try :-)

Bad traffic all the time, the high street, which is the main road in and out of kenbworth, is also the main parking for the high street
