Port Vale allotments?
I have been told that there used to be an allotment where the car park is now in Port Vale. Does anyone know why the allotment was closed and have any pics of how it used to look?
Also the houses opposite used to be shops, did anyone used to buy anything from there?

Which end of Portvale do you mean.
As there are car parks at both the Mill Stream and Millmead school side of the barrier.

There used to be a shop in what is now a house between the Millstream and the barrier I think, it was a "general store" I remeber Dad sreved them with fruit and Veg but they also sold pegs/ paraffin more or less everything.
There was also Bridens baker and general store down where "Manic Ceramics" (I think its called?) is now

You are right about the shops Marilyn.
The one near the Mill Stream was owned and run by keith Emmerton. He later moved to the shop on the corner of Byde Street & Belfore Street. (Now a house conversion) and was indeed a general store (A bit like the BBC’s ‘Arkwight’!).
I asked my mum who has lived in Hertford all of her life but she does not recall any allotments in Port vale.
I am not sure what used to be behind the flint wall opposite the Ceramic shop prior to it being a Car park. Any thoughts?

Having lived in Port Vale as a young boy I remember Keith's shop from the mid 70's and from what I can remember, after he retired from the Byde St premises he went on to sell second hand bikes from his house on the outskirts of Waterford.
My mum and dad used to have a plot on the allotments. These were on the Millstream side of the barrier and, I think, these were behind the small car park and were accessed via the McMullens lorry depot entrance (next to the barrier), by a small path that ran besides one of McMullens industrial units.

I lived in Russell Court Mews for a while in the late seventies and reckon that the bit behind the flint wall was scrubland. I also remember discovering the Folly for the first time before Beane River View was constructed.
Also remember borrowing a tin bath from someone in Port Vale when my tiny bath (well, shower) room was out of action. I was shocked to discover that many of these cottages in Port Vale were owned by Macs, yet did not have bathrooms themselves. I trust that this is not now the case..

He did - I bought one of his "recycled" cycles in the early 90's.

But in the seventies living in rented accomodation without a bathroom was a good thing. The landlord could only charge a "controlled" rent which I think could not exceed £1.
I remember my Mother complaining bitterly that because my Father had, over the years, installed Electric, hot water and a bathroom the landlord had been allowed to increase the rent!
