penny pinching
A friend of mine has just been into WH Smith Hertford to get a set of books she wanted, she planned to use the £5 off voucher smith have kindly been giving out recently. But was disappointed as the set of books was £9.99 and the voucher stated that you had to spend £10 to get the £5 off. She offered to give them the extra 1p but they wouldn't budge, so they lost the sale to a unhappy bunny.[V]

The voucher had to be spent on one book £10 or over not any other items to make it over £10 or she would have done.

I'm not bein gfunny, but if the voucher says on it to be used on books to the value of £10 or over, I wouldn't have even tried to use it on one priced @ £9.99 as that's not over £10.

If you don't ask you don't get. Given that the difference was a paltry 1p it was worth trying IMHO.

The Set of books wasn't priced labelled, my friend had to take to counter and ask the price assumed it would be over £10 as she had seen it in another book shop for more than £9.99 but thought she could pick it up using the voucher.
Maybe Smiths just have certain books they don't want you using the vouchers for so price them just under £10 and others they want to get rid of are priced over £10 so most people will use the vouchers for these if that is the book they want.

Much as it pains me, I have to agree with Steve on this one. With the current economic climate you HAVE to bargain! Trouble is in somewhere like Smith's the assistants do not have the authority to negotiate.
