Dead cat

I need advise on who to contact. I saw a dead tabby cat next to the crash barrier on the A414 between waters garage and the town centre roundabout and it needs to be collected not only to give it a proper burial but to let the owner know. Any ideas who would collect it?

Sadly, unless a kindly passer-by picks it up it will more than likely be *collected* by the morning roadsweeper lorry/council truck. Unfortunately, cats do not have to be reported after being hit as dogs do(or used to) so the fate of the poor wee moggie will be in the hands of the sweeper. The council may have a person who deals with the disposal of road dead animals, but I think unless it was *micro-chipped* and checked at the depot/vet surgery the poor owners will just realise that their pet has gone by his/her absence at the next meal time or when the pet never returns home.

If you wanted you could ring around the local vets and let them know the description, the owners may have already let them know one is missing in case someone brought it in.

I will go by tommorrow morning after 9am to see if I can find it. If I do I will take it to the vets to see if it is micro chipped or has a collar on. I can't go until after 9am though.

Thank you I was so upset when I saw it, its so sad. It was next to the central reservation crash barrier going towards Hertford Tesco roundabout, I saw it due to the traffic crawling in the rush hour.

'to give it a proper burial'? for god's sake it's a CAT! Do you want to give every badger, fox, or munjac deer a proper burial!!?

So, when a pet dies it gets thrown in the bin...? Our pets get planted in the ground good and proper as they are a part of our family. [:)]

Ours have always been buried in the garden too. (and yes, with a little memorial, maybe a small cross or stone to mark its' passing)I am not in the least bit ashamed to admit having done that. There is nothing worse than having a pet cat (or dog) go missing - it is really distressing(especially when there are children involved). At least you can have closure instead of waiting and hoping for them to return.

I'd be very interested to see the badger and fox's that live in your house that you spend time and love making sure that they are well and fed and make sure they will be looked after if you go away. I have had a cat since I was 2 years old and my first one lived until I was 19 and so was very special.

You obviously don't have a cat or dog as a pet then Buzz or you wouldn't have made that comment. Our family and I have grown up with dogs and cats as pets and they have all been berried in garden apart from one, which was too big so we had him cremated. They are just like a member of the family and are missed.

You people make me smile. You bestow human qualities on animals. Yes, in the past I have had them, both cats & dogs. Would never have either again. As for Jaycee who said that he/she buried a pet with a cross, that's very presumptive. The animal might have been Jewish or Muslim, so how insulting would that have been?. As for other comments, yes Mr. P your dead animal gets thrown in the bin. Do you think it would have appreciated three verses of 'Onward Christian Soldiers' or perhaps an oak coffin draped with the Union Flag? And no, Dennismoore, I'm not turning into a miserable old git........I have been one for several years! I just don't get this adoration of pets thing! Strangers dogs that think they have a right to sniff you, or hump your leg. Neighbours cats that crap in your garden.People who need pets are obviously displaying a fundamental void in their relationships with other people if they need a smelly animal to turn their attention to.

au contraire, Buzz.. I take issue on the fact that you accuse pet owners as missing something fundamental in their relationships. What a load of cr*p! the benefits of having a pet are numerous. They not only give comfort and pleasure to the owners but also have huge health benefits, in fact some hospitals even use pet therapy in reducing heart rate/blood pressure/stress, etc. {quote}There is no doubt that the companionship and love a pet can offer is a valuable thing. But maybe the benefits of pets go beyond this emotional bond. A growing body of evidence suggests that those who keep pets are likely to benefit from a variety of improvements in health. I agree, cats can be infuriating at times by using a neighbour’s garden as a loo, and dogs that do the leg-hump thing is often awkward and annoying but – surely that kind of behaviour in dogs can be controlled (read that as should be) by their owners. (don’t get me started on that again..) Cats cannot be controlled in regard to the toilet habit – but gardeners can use measures to avoid it if it becomes a real issue. Surely, millions of other pet owners cannot all be wrong….

I collected the cat and took him to the vets. He was un-castrated not wearing a collar and had no micro-chip. He was a large tabby male with white toes on his front paws, white feet on his back paws. A white neck underneath and 2 smudges of white either side of his top lip like a moustache. The vets will send him for routine cremation.

Oh my… Buzz <shaking head>– From your last comments, it seems maybe that you have some unresolved issues in your life. I was not trying to destroy my argument, I was merely stating that on occasions cats/dogs can be annoying to others – I actually tried to see the other view-point. However, I am really angry about the quip about anti-freeze – it kills animals in a very painful manner – not that it would probably concern you too much. My real point was to state that pets are not owned because there is something lacking in their personal life. [/img]On that note, I will not make any further comments as I do not want to get into a quarrel. *J*

I didn't mean to post the cat post right in the middle of a page like it was... After all the joy that animals have given me working with them and owning them over the years I am glad poor old puss was not left there to rot. As for the anti-freeze quip, you are a very hard person indeed if you think it fun to post such comments. To see an animal die in agony after anti-freeze poisioning is no laughing matter im afraid [V] I guess there are alwyas going to be those that love animals and those that don't.

OK first of all, why do you think that I have to set an example. To whom exactly? Secondly, you would have to prove that someone deliberately set out to harm an animal by putting out anti-freeze. If I put out anti-freeze in my garden to kill vermin such as rats, and a cat trespassed in my garden.........not my fault I think

I think how we treat animals actually says something about us as people. Lots of serial killers started off being cruel to animals for instance. Lots of very generous and good humanitarians are good to animals (I am thinking of Paul McCartney and his late first wife). Coming on here to let a worried owner know that their missing cat's body has been found is a very kind and caring act and deserves to be welcomed. Burying the cat does not do a great deal for the cat as it has died and when I die I couldn't care less what happens to my body, you could leave my bloated gut out there for the foxes to pick at, but if my cat or pet went missing and died I would hope someone who found their body would be kind enough to bury it as it what I would have done. Coming on here and making disturbing comments like Buzz's is probably due to Buzz's boredom and need to get some reaction as something is missing in his life. There seems to be a lot more animal cruelty these days or maybe its just more reported, but if there really is more cruelty than it says something about society.

Cats eat small birds and mice so are therefore a menace to the native wildlife of this country. So in a way cat owners are the cruel ones by encouraging these bird killers.

Surely there comes a point when the right to the free expression of views becomes purely designed to be antagonistic and upset others. Has that point not been reached here, Admin?

Agreed. And can we have an 'ignore' button, please.... <sigh>

I've always liked the facility offered by some forums where you can click an approve/disapprove link, which shows the net number of people who have agreed or disagreed with a post.

Birds eat insects and berries from plants. Those that do not have cats are the cruel ones by encouraging these insect and plant eating machines. Mice are vermin anyway. Where is the rolling-eyes smiley, almost every post you make is so completely not thought out they require one.

That might be an idea, but not necessarily a good idea. It may represent a popularist view at the time. For example, you could ask how many women in Harlow think that pink lycra tights are the ultimate fashion accessory if you weigh over 15 stone. The fact that 95% might think so doesn't mean it's a good thing

These are very nasty comments from buzz in relation to anti-freeze being "a good solution" for cats in gardens. What a sour puss.
Can we have some decent, very effective but non lethal methods of stopping neighbours cats coming into my garden and crapping in the areas where my child plays.

sorry don't understand 'infame'? furthermore just because my views conflict with yours doesn't mean that I don't have the right to express them...it's called living in a democracy.....or what's left of it. As for intending to anger or upset.....do you live in the real world?? Sorry, but just because I don't share your view of cuddly sweet furry little animals doesn't actually make me the anti christ. You carry on loving the little flea carrying creatures, and I'll carry on hating the smelly little things,

Off-topic and discussed elsewhere

Maybe we should put piles of lion and tiger poo in the worst fouled areas... but then i suppose people would complain about that! (mind you, it's probably bigger and therefore more easily avoided...)[}:)]

**sigh** <----taking the bait Did I actually say anywhere that I love cuddly wuddly animals? Pay attention. I simply stated that posting with the obvious intention of provoking upset (i.e not making intelligent, worthwile contributions to a discussion) is being a troll. Let me explain...since you seem to have difficulty. To say I don't like cats because......etc etc' is being part of an open discussion in a democratic society. To think it's 'funny' posting about anti freeze etc whilst feigning confusion at obvious typos contributes absolutely nothing.

I think you will find anyone puting down antifreeze to kill rats have to make sure that any animals such as cats ect. do not have access to this or they are breaking the law and could well be arrested and investigated by the R.S.P.C.A. with a view to prosecute them. [xx(]

Ooh get you. Sorry if I am not as über intelligent as you obviously think you are. Fact is cats are not native to this island and kill our native birds and mammals. What's not thought out about that Einstein?

At lease Einstein knew his facts, very much unlike you Aubend - You're completely wrong with your so-called "fact". See here: http://www.arkive.org/european-wildcat/felis-silvestris-grampia/range-and-habitat.html Get it right, if you're going to try argue and dont want to look like a troll. Then there's the issue of "our native birds", you dont think for one minute there arnt introductions in the bird world do you!!? Truth is there's nowhere that has what is defined as native only any more. If you got rid of all the cats in the uk there would probably be a imbalance elsewhere in the system! Certainly Rats would become even more of a problem than they already are.

Oh dear. We have all just witnessed 3 days & 6 pages of very publicly putting buzz through quite intense therapy. And its all been rather uncomfortably entertaining - a sort of “car crash posting”. So may I suggest…. 1/ We leave the poor man (& indeed he is of that sex) alone for a bit of time to recover – no-one should have to go through such intense examination over such a short period of time. & 2/ What is the going half hourly rate for psychiatric therapy these days? On the basis that it is, I guess, difficult to obtain (certainly to this quality) on the NHS, a small donation to the Cat’s Protection League for the community-based treatment received may be appropriate Buzz ….

I'm pretty sure who needs the therapy....and it ain't me!! You obviously have amazing medical credentials to have decided on this course of action without having ever met me or knowing anything about my medical history......perhaps you you would like to share them with the rest of us. In the meantime, send me your address so that I can direct your cuddly furry friends to go and use your garden as a welcoming toilet
