Just wanted to start a thread in the correct section about this great addition to the Hertford restaurant scene Went last night for a girls night out, 22 of us, in the private dining room upstairs. What a fab evening. Great atmosphere, polite and efficent service and fantastic food - the sea bass was to die for Not one complaint from all those ladies - now that says a lot - will most certainly be going back [:)]

Glad you had a good time - we have always liked Loch Fyne having dined at a number across the country. And it must be popular with others or else everyone is trying to get in with it being new Hertford. Tried to book this afternoon for a table for 2 on Friday evening, only to be told they were full Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings! Do I have to book a week ahead in future? - haven't had to do that for years in Hertford except at Christmas. Interestingly, went to Deco a couple of weeks back on Friday evening and they were less than half full. Ho hum, will go to Tewinbury again on Friday and if the weather stays good we can eat outside.

I am going tonight - really looking forward to it as heard some great reports! I booked a week ago so maybe that will be best!

Had lunch there yesterday - they were full up again!! The Haddock and chips with mushy peas was superb [:)]

It's a winner really. Loch Fyne are always good and I think its a great move that we have one in town now. Just wish the wife wasn't a veggie then i'd be able to go more often.

Went last night and had a fab time, food was yummy and staff were polite. I had a halibut special which was delicious...Very highly recommended and will be visiting again. Be sure to book!

Has anyone mangaged to book at table here at short notice? Just called to book a table for Mrs Fired and I and can't get a table for Friday until end of July!!! Has anyone been able to turn up and manage to get a table or is it really that busy?

Food was good, service nice (if a bit naive ) booze expensive - Single G&T $4.50 - wine nothing under £12. P (Dipsomaniac Rviews Ltd}

quote:I suspect, as I mentioned on a thread about the Sugar Hut (G&T £4.25), that the measure you were served was 35ml which is larger than what used to be the norm, so £4.50 in a restaurant is not too outrageous. As for £12 for a bottle of wine, well at normal restaurant prices where are you going to get an halfway decent bottle for less?

Booking at short notice especially for Friday and Saturday evenings is a no no at present. Tried to book for Friday evening yesterday and they are already full - soonest they could do is Friday 31st - so seems to be at least a 2 week wait. I guess it must be due to it being new and lower than average prices.

Anyone visited Loch Fyne with children? I wondered if they have either veggie or children's menus and if it is the kind of place which would generally be welcoming to children for an early evening meal? thanks

Yes they have a kids menu and colouring stuff etc. Very child friendly. My daughter likes the haddock goujons. Kids eat free in August - go to http://www.lochfyne.com and you can download a £10 voucher too [:)]

went Sat night. Was not impressed. loved the style of the rest aurant and the staff were good, but...asked for medium rare steak....it still had a pulse. I found a hair in my chips. We were stuck in a corner, right at back of restaurant....we booked table 2 weeks ago, and told them it was a birthday dinner....rubbish table. The only thing I enjoyed was the wine ! and bread.

Yes a small proportion of it's menu might come from one Loch in Scotland but do you think it could supply all of its restaurants up and down the country. The decor is very nice and the staff not too bad, but as for the food decidedly average

No! not even this restaurant's location supply fish from Lochfyne: http://www.lochfyne.com/Restaurants/Locations/Cairndow.aspx The fish comes from here: http://www.lochfyne.com/Restaurants/Locations/Cairndow.aspx Are you saying that the fish are average size or the food is average, is it a white van that delivers the fish and do any of the staff have Scottish accents to give it that authentic feel to the place? we went last week, and I have to say it was fantastic. I had mackerel rillet and sea bass which was very very tasty. We also got to sit outside at the back of the place, which was quite pleasant apart from the roar of the 414! Looks very nice inside, will be going back soon. Not cheap really, but the web £10 voucher helps. It was very busy despite being mid week and of peak time! Despite that the service was still good. It may be a chain, but in my view that doesnt detract from the place at all. They do have a very impressive policy on sustainability. I hope they continue to do well! Oh; Shame the chowder has disappeared from the menu though!

The do a take-away fish & chips service for £6 including some mushy peas. 10 minute wait at the bar and it was delicious, only down side was that the peas we more on the cold side than warm. I don’t know how this price compares to a ‘normal’ fish and chip plaice ([:p])

I tried to go to Loch Fyne the friday before last and was turned away beocz we hadn't booked. this was despite only two tables in the whole restaurant being occupied. when we walked past an hour and a half later the place was still half empty. why do places like loch fyne turn away actual customers in favour of customers who may or may not turn up? I don't do second chances so Loch Fyne can do without my business. i'm sure they'll send offers etc when the novelty has worn off but if you don't want my money once, you don't get offered it again!
Reply ID 66343
Just out of interest, how could you tell from walking past that it was still half full (never half empty!)baring in mind that the two windows on Fore street only give you a view of the bar and the wet fish counter? Or had you fashioned a periscope out of a few pieces of drain pipe and car door mirrors?

Blimey Wingcomm that's a bold statement not giving 'second chances'. Fair play though as opinions are just that.

There does seem to be a bit of a pattern though. I tried to book in on their special deal a few weeks back. You have to order before 7pm. They said initially they were fully booked but then decided they could "squeeze us in". There were only 2 of us. When we turned up about 6.45 there was hardly anyone in there and even when we left at gone 8, I doubt if it was even half full. Having that that, the food was very good.
Reply ID 66544
Well we finally managed to get in the Friday before last having had to book almost 2 weeks in advance. Even then they couldn't do my requested time at 7.30 - only 7.15 or 7.45 - guess they must be trying to stagger the bookings to assist the kitchens. The place was very busy, which for this type of restaurant I would expect for a Friday night anyway and I noticed that as soon as a table became free it was filled with new customers. Service seemed a bit 'all over the place' although I have to say they tried and our waitress was certainly very friendly and polite - maybe they just need more time to train the staff and get to know where the specials board is! As with any other Loch Fyne I have been to, the food was very good and remains reasonably priced. Will definitely go back although must make sure I don't get one of the tables by the front window as they feel a bit isolated. We sat round the back where there was more atmosphere. So where to next? - might give the Hertford House Kitchen a try

Campus and I finally got some time off work, couldn't be bothered to cook, so went to Loch Fyne for dinner this evening. Having just read the other postings, I'm surprised we got in without booking; and even more surprised that most of the reviews are quite positive. It's just another over-priced, under-average chain restaurant for Hertford. When will we get some good, interesting restaurants to justify our inflated house prices? Anyway, dear readers, here is our review. The menu was very disappointing. Where was all the fish? OK - they had bream, haddock, sole and sea bass, but how about tuna, wild salmon, skate, brill, John Dory, monkfish, swordfish...? You get a much better selection from Judy on the fish stall on a Saturday morning, at 1/4 the price. A company of this size must surely have a supply chain efficient enough to supply its restaurants with a much wider range of fresh fish, no? Fish cakes, battered haddock, moules-frites, fish-with-pasta really belong in a pub, not a fish restaurant with wooden floors and blackboards. My bream was nice enough - it tastes like sea bass by the way - but had too much butter on it, and no vegetables (unless you paid extra, which we didn't). Campus's moules-frites were "OK, but not as good as Belgo's" and the muscadet "alright" with a tell-tale nose wrinkling. My New Zealand riesling wine was far, far too cold to taste or smell of anything, and when it finally warmed up it tasted of Blue Nun so I wished it hadn't. And the desert board? What a disappointment. You don't usually feel particularly full after a meal at a fish restaurant, so we were looking forward to it. But - chocolate tart, creme brulee, banoffe pie, stp, ice cream and cheese board? How boring. Is Loch Fyne owned by Whitbreads? Or Greene King? Or Brake Bros? Once I've finished this, I'll check. I ordered the chocolate tart and it was actually not unreasonable - dense, chocolatey and not too sweet or slimy but served with a oddly conceived dollop of ginger and orange marmalade, and carelessly presented off-center on a detergent stained plate. So, price with tip, £50 for 1.5 very average courses each, a glass of poor wine each and a bottle of water to share. Too expensive, in my humble opinion. So long, thanks for the fish, but won't be going back. Off to Auberge du Lac for lunch tomorrow. They've put their prices up unfortunately, but it'll be two hours of sublime dining in exquisite surroundings with attentive, professional staff, for 50% more.

each to their own, but rather a stupid review. Essentially you're saying if you pay 50% more you get better food and better service. Well dur. 50% is a giant leap in price level. Anyone expecting loch fyne to be of that class is clearly going to be dissapointed, but lower your expectations to what the place actually is, i.e. a very fairly priced fish restaurant, and i'd say it's far the best in hertford. The bream i had there was absolutely fantastic. If you dont want to eat pub style fishcakes then dont order them. Pretty obvious. They have to cater for people who dont like fish as fish. No doubt it'll remain as busy as it currently is. oh; they told us the deserts were made in house, not sure if thats true..? I doubted it, but they were good.
Reply ID 67475
I thought the Menu is displayed in the window for all to view before booking? Oh and on the website. The individual that wrote the review is obviously likes their food, but in my view their comments are a bit like saying Bella Italia does not have a patch on Locanda Locatelli and you can get a pizza from Tesco's at a fraction of the price. Sorry I have to disagree with your review, as well written as it maybe. I enjoyed my couple of visits there and do not think £15 for Sea bass is expensive.
Reply ID 67492
Not sure if £15 for "farmed" seabass is good value, compared to Wild seabass found in good fish mongers etc. Farmed bass is supplied cheap as chips.

in addition to fishmongers the comparison is made in contrast to other restaurants that sell wild v farmed and charge the same price for a product that is sustainably fished in the UK thus putting the pound back into our economny not back into the pockets of unehtical farmers in France & greece where the majority of this product comes from.

sustainable usually means working to an ecological mandate when discussing fish, where intensive farming with the exception of organic is always poor regarding, ecology of an area/feed etc, animal well being and your health of course

quote:Not true; Did you not see the river cottage series on fish? he looked at farmed salmon in scotland - started off with a blinkered view as you yourself has, but admitted in the end that the mechanisms used were actually very good, and indeed admitted the fish tasted very good too. With all systems, intensive or not, there will be good and bad variants, but to say intensive is intrinsically bad is wrong.

Our first visit to Loch Fyne (celebration of my 60th birthday). I hadn't read the earlier reviews, or if I had old age made me forget. Well the food was fairly good - I liked my beer battered haddock and Mrs G liked her haddock with mash, peas and horseradish sauce. I was less happy with the presentation of the food, my haddock sitting on an imitation newspaper and the chips buried by two unneccesary ramekin dishes sitting on the plate. Overall, though, it was reasonable value. I agree with other reviewers who have commented that they found the menu a bit limited, especially in the area of traditional fish & chip choices. We didn't much like the service - bit pushy and over-attentive until it came to when we wanted to pay, by which time clearly someone else was getting the attentive bit. Then, just at the end, I realised that the guy serving us was Borat in disguise, so the evening ended with amusement. It was the way he said, "you like my restaurant, no..." (with Borat accent).

Personally I don't agree at all. Ambience is very low on my priorities, but I know it's important for some. For me the ambience is a bit like what we call "hygiene factors" in HR speak. In other words, I would notice it if the ambience was really poor, but as long as there are no significant problems with it my main interests, in rank order, are the food (includes quality, menu choice), value for money, and then service.

We went today (our 4th or 5th visit) and fed a family of 4 for under £30 (kids eat free before 6pm!!) Regardless of the fact that this is excellent value for money, I can't speak highly enough about this place. I find the food great, the staff extremely friendly and great with the kids and I really can't fault it one bit. I would highly recommend this restaurant, it's great! (We'd actually gone to another (more expensive) restaurant at the opposite end of the street first and gave up waiting for a high-chair and/or a menu!).

Went back last night and the place was full. A couple ahead of us tried to get a table without having booked and were turned away - we booked a week ago and understand that it is still full on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, so there must be something they are doing right. The food whilst good, is nothing special for the price, but the service was excellent, so we will certainly go again as long as I remember to book well in advance. That said, there are now so many restaurants in and around Hertford to choose from. Just seen the post regarding the Whistling Duck and must give that a try.

Went last night for the first time. I had tried booking earlier in the day on the off-chance (last minute arrangement to eat out) and was told there was absolutely no chance as they were fully booked. However, having got into town at about 8.20pm and looked at some of the other places, (all of which seemed to be full) we took a chance and popped in to see if they had a table. And they did, for 9pm, which was fine. The service was friendly and fairly quick. We had the Lobster shellfish platter for two, which was very good. One small point: The shellfish were served on an enormous pile of ice, which, I found made the food rather too cold. Will go back again, but not sure would order that dish again.

Having enjoyed the meal on my visit there recently, decided to try the take-away Fish 'n Chips on Friday evening. Went in during the day, booked it and paid for it. Collected it on time and drove back to Bengeo. Oh dear, not impressed! Both the fish and the chips were soggy....no crisp batter on the fish, and apart from being soggy the chips looked decidely manky. Won't be doing that again!

Thought I may re bump this thread. Popped in to Loch Fyne on a whim Mondya night. I think it was Robert(?) who served us, very polite and pleasant chap - he had been hit by two staff being absent that night so was literally running around doing everything but still had the time to ensure we were comfortable, made recommendations, kept us well looked after etc. Definitely will be going back after that service - thanks chaps! On a side note - we have had the take away fish and chips and they were superb. Mine was crispy and the chips were great. My first thoughts were there wasn't enough but I was pleasantly surprised when I couldn't finish it all :)

Had my birthday meal last night - my first time in Loch Fyne. Staff were very good, the right mix of helpful/letting you get on without pestering. Menu had good range, at least three mains I wanted! Food was hot, well presented and very tasty. Have no idea how much it cost, but I will be going again.

Went back here last Friday evening (using up my £10 voucher which we get a few times a year having registered on their web site). It really was very good - service was great and enthusiastic and we complimented the manager on our waiter when we left. Food portions were fine and it was good to see the fish pie has now been brought back onto the winter menu. All in all, a great evening reasonably priced.

I couldn't agree more - it's very reliable, pretty good food (I speak as someone who always goes for the veggie options though), a decent wine list and good service. I think it's good value for money and is definitely at the upper end of the chain restaurants in Hertford.

Went back to Loch Fyne tonight where they have recently introduced their new winter menu. Even for a chain always thought the food is good here at a reasonable price and the service is very attentive.

I've been there three times now. Been served by Gabriel twice and he is an absolute star! Always so attentive, friendly and takes the time to have a little chat as well as serve the food. He's a credit to the business. Food has always been good quality - admittedly not particularly inexpensive but still good value. Haven't had take away so can't comment on that.

Dined here again on Tuesday and took advantage of their £9.95 two course set menu offer. We were really surprised at the size of the portions for the price. We expected smaller ones than usual. As always the food was absolutely excellent as was the service. To finish off we both had the bread and butter pudding served with ice cream and creme Anglaise. Mmmm. Can't wait for our next visit.

I have just purchased a flying shark - I would really LOVE to fly it through Loch Fyne in Fore Street but not sure they would like it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIJINiK9azc What do you think? I think Gabriel might see the funny side but you can never really anticipate everybody's reaction.
