Are there time restrictions on flights? I was woken by a jet engined plane flying quite low over Hertford at 3:42 this morning.

There were four flights scheduled into Luton between 2am and 7am this morning. It was probably one of these, or possibly cargo. Flights into Luton pass directly over the town late in the evening and overnight if they're using runway 26. There are restricted on the number of overnight flights into the airport, but no overall ban.

SSE has published a step by step guide to help people to respond to BAA’s Noise Action Plan consultation. BAA is required by law to publish a five-year plan to explain how it intends to reduce nuisance from noise and its impact on sleep disturbance, health and education caused by the airport’s operations and overflying. SSE has criticised the way some information has been presented by BAA and gaps in proposals to address noise issues. “This consultation is a start but there are no teeth in the guidance for delivering the plan that would ensure BAA did anything it wasn’t already doing,” said Peter Sanders. So job losses at Easyjet and price hikes or what were cheap airfares for the public. I cant see the upside, especially as I live on more or less the highest point in Bengeo and do not see what all the fuss over aircraft noise is.

I'm with Shunt on this. When runway 26 is in use at Luton, aircraft on approach are being vectored onto the ILS and fly directly over my house and I seldom hear them. At this point in the flight, they will probably be at about 4000ft with engines set to idle. The only time I notice them is at night, if I look out of my window and see their lights. Similarly, with Stansted, I only see aircraft if they are taking off from runway 23. The majority turn left shortly after take-off. This takes them approximately over Ware, but aircraft are restricted to 250 knts on take-off and climb out until they have attained 10,000ft. This is for noise reduction purposes. Although I can see them, I rarely hear them. The aircraft which are noisy are the helicopters that appear to be flying a shuttle between (I guess, Stansted and either LHR or GTW), but don't generally hear them at night. I wonder how many people who complain about the noise from these airports are quite pleased that they live so near to them (relatively speaking), when it comes to flying off on holiday!

We all notice different things I suppose. The aircraft noise doesn't bother my husband, but my neighbour moved because of it! When we moved here 13 years ago it wasn't so bad, but I noticed it more from about 6 or 7 years ago. Some times of the day we have nothing, but it's the late landings that are noisy, especially when the airport is trying to get them all in about midnight. Being able to travel is a wonderful thing and most people, including me, love the opportunity to go to different countries and experience other cultures. Flights are a way of life, but maybe we all have a responsibility to think about the journeys we make. I wonder how many business meetings could use video conferencing instead on some occasions? Sometimes I think a wedding can only take place if there has been a stag weekend in Dublin and a hen weekend in Barcelona!! One thing for sure, the planes will not be going away just yet. I'll buy some better ear plugs and have an extra glass of wine in the evening.

Ok, I'll give you that they're probably closer to Sawbridgeworth, but depending on the aircraft type, distance can be deceptive. A 747, would look to be closer than a Learjet. Aircraft departing Stansted on one of the six NPR's (Noise Preferential Routes) have to stick to these flight paths until they reach 4000ft (3000ft for one of the NPR's) However, these paths are 3km wide, so actual position of aircraft can vary. Once they have attained 4000ft ATC can direct them off the path towards their destination. Modern jets can reach 4000ft pretty quickly! I've never noticed any inbound to Rwy 05 at EGSS, but most of the time the wind is from the SW, so as aircraft need to land and take off into wind, RW 23 is used far more often, in fact 2/3rds of take-offs and landings use Rwy 23. Whilst there are defined flight paths for take-off the same does not apply to landings until aircraft are established on the ILS, or Localiser. ATC will determine the route that each individual plane takes until it establishes on the ILS.
