Another pub question. "Alternative pubs"
I know the phrase "Alternative" is a bit of a curates egg but a pub with a kind of "alterntive" crowd, not Chav, not normals, where do the students, goths, hippys etc go to drink a pint. Back in my youth when I lived close to Hertford the Blackbirds was the bikers pub and that's where I went. Now that I've moved back I can't seem to find a pub that fits the bill. Best I've found so far is the Barge.

I was gonna suggest the Barge....don't really know if it's still the same tho....there was also the place on Railway St & occasionally the Ram

I was thinking of the Ram too, smiley. Great atmosphere, the punters are downright strange in there. One bloke once noted that, if I didn't move quickly to allow him through to the toilet, he would, in all fairness, have to p*ss in my pocket. I swear he was serious too.
I doubt there are enough hippys in Hertford to actually fill a pub.

Definitely. I had the afternoon portion of my stag night in there (i.e. the bit I can remember), and I seem to remember that some bloke "invented" a celebratory drink for me - tasted, I think, like drambuie with a hint of red bull. I don't remember much after that.
Best place in town to play darts, that's for sure.

I first went in The Blackbirds about 10 years ago. Me & my mates went to see The Alligators play as my mates had a band and were looking for places to play. A very "unique" night is the best description I can come up with.
Would Eric by any chance be a bit of a loony who would get smashed out of his head, holding tables over his head and getting away with whatever he wanted as everyone was ****-scared of him?

This is a post I made on the Hertford Characters forum in November.
One Hertford character who is very much missed is Eric the former landlord of the Blackbirds. Rumour has it that one Sunday, Eric announced to all his customers that they were to leave their drinks, as he was locking the pub and taking them all to the Salisbury to buy a round. They then all returned to their drinks at the Blackbirds an hour or so later. I have never, ever heard of anyone doing that.
Yes I did know Eric, I did go into the Blackbirds from time to time...must admit I didn't really like it....so I wasn't a regular
