Dunnage Family
I have not been able to find a birth certificate for my grandfather Walter Henry Dunnage or his brother Henry, I believe they were born in Hertford and lived in the slums at Butcherley Green (now Birchley Green)I think we was married to Jane Bickell. Henry lived at 18 Green St at the time of his marrige. Walter died while living at Campfield Road Hertford.
I found some old Mercury info stating that Jane was arrested for being drunk in Fore Street two weeks running (not a family trait!!!) and they were fined 5 shilling for not sending their children to school.
Any info would be great

There was a Walter Dunnage aged 3 in the 1871 census living in Bishops Stortford - may be the one?

In the Kelly's Book of Hertford dated 1936 there are listed two W.H.Dunnage, one at 34 Campfield Rd and the other at 8 Baker St. They are both still listed in a later edition but that is undated, and the Baker Street one had moved next door to no 10. Not much info but hope it might be of some use.

Hi Alex, yes I have his marriage cert and death cert both of which indicate that he was born in 1890. He was listed as on active service on his marriage cert and his wife Violet May Burfield was living at 42 Trinity Street Harrow Green Essex.
Henry married Ester Ashwell in 1922 and his address was 18 Gree Street Hertford.
I have found a Walter Gaskin who had a son Walter Sidney in 1890 do you think it could be him?

Just a thought, I also have the medal card records for both brothers, does anyone know if the National Archives hold any records of armed forces personel, i.e. address, date of bith?

I was once told that the best source for this kind of info would be via the medal holder's regiment or it's sucessor if appropriate?

Hi Leo, Thanks for the links, I will have a look at them.
Unfortunatley both records only show the Victory and British Star medals, don't know what happened to the actual medals either.

If you have their name and numbers the pension and or service records may be on Ancestry, if you are not a member feel free to send me the details and I will have a look for you. If they are there they give a lot of detail of birth places, next of kin etc.

Just a quick update have been helping Suedobie sort this out and it looks like the family used 2 surnames and kept swapping them so on some BMD's they are one name and on Census's another. Not got anywhere with the WW1 stuff but HALS absent voter list has confirmed who was living where and using what name!!

Yes it is a tangelled web but we are getting there. If anyone has families living in or around Maidhead Street/ Railway Street/ Butcherley Green between 1880 and 1911 we probably have found most of them!! and can even tell you who was related to who!!
