As we've just moved up to Hertford and it seems to have plenty of places to eat I am thinking about taking my girlfriend (lucky lady that she is!) to a Hertford restaurant for Valentines Day this year. Any recommendations greatly accepted...

Ok, to kick off more controversy, don't eat in Hertford! Auberge du Lac at Brocket Hall is always a good call, but then again you may want to save that for a really special occasion.... Alternatively, The Cabinet at Reed, or the French Restaurant at The Bush Hall Hotel in Hatfield are quality.

No budget issues and I don't like eating in chains. I thought Hertford was supposed to be ok to eat?? I'd rather stay local if I can so we can get roaringly drunk and go on elsewhere without having to worry about getting home too! Where is Reed?

Fair enough - you would need cabs to the 3 suggested. Reed is up the A10. Personal 3 recommendations for such a night would be: Baan Thitiya (up St Andrews St) Elbert Wurlings (behind tax office) Number 11 looks good, although haven't tried it yet. I'll leave the Hillside marketing dept to push their own establishment!

Elberts is not usually open on a Monday, although for valentines I’m sure they very well may be. The food is above average but the toilets are very secondary school in appearance, nice site http://www.elberts.co.uk.

Baan Thitiya is definitely one of the better Thai's I have eaten in including some very good ones in the City. The Paddy Fields is a long standing member of the Hertford restaurant community and is normally very good. I have heard from a few people that the Waterside is very good especially the steaks (up to 20oz fillets) Lussmans have good grill menu, excellent service and a pretty good wine list at very affordable prices. The Shahensha is the best Indian in Hertford (my opinion) but may not be your idea of romantic! The Zodiac at Hanbury Manor is very good. The Hillside is supposed to be good but as you may have read I have not yet visited. If you want my humble opinion Baan Thitiya would be my fist option, but book early. (the red Thai curry is fantastic)

Don't forget though, even the best restaurants tend to discard their normal menu in favour of a 'special' valentine menu so it's best to check with the restaurant first. Because of this we tend to eat Indian on that night.

The Cbinet is at Reed near Royston. It has a celebrity chef Paul Bloxham and I've only ever read good reviews about it. In fact someone was raving about to me in the White Horse yesterday.See for yourself on http://www.thecabinetatreed.co.uk

After all that we ended up having a curry. We went to The Shahenshah but to be honest I wasn't a huge fan. I didn't think the meat was that great a quality. That said, my girlfriend enjoyed it there.

I went to the Cabinet on Monday night (yes for Valentines!) and we were very well looked after. Had previousley not been too bothered about going as the menu didn't really say much to me as some nice restaurants do BUT the food was fab. 3 course meal plus wine & service totalled £80 for 2. Service was excellent & not too stuffy but at the same time they knew what they were doing.
