Just read in the Mercury that there are plans to turn what was or is Freedon Australia in the small arcade in Railway street in to a bar that caters for people over 25 as we do not have one that does??????? Anybody know any more?

only that it seems poinless![:D]

Why pointless? The more bars, the less crowded they become, the quicker it is to get a drink.

I think a wine bar is well over due. I'm amazed one hasn't already opened at either the old Tyre place, Your Move, or the building society opposite Baroosh.

It's not so much a goth club/pub that the town needs so much as an alternative that isn't a quaint establishment or mass-appeal alcopop shop. Anyone who remembers The Blackbirds circa Eric will recognise what the town's missing.

How many people would actually want to visit a place like that?? The idea of a business is to make money, not to necessarily make everyone happy. Although I am all for a mixture of establishments in the Town, surely they have to be profitable, or all we will end up with is empty units. Unfortunately you will just have to accept the fact that the general public now prefer to spend their time in more salubrious surroundings. Anything different in Town would not be profitable in my opinion. Sorry.

I think there should be a bar that caters for over 40 year olds as I anticipate a growing market, based upon what I have seen from Baroosh and Number 11.

I think A Grove has only just moved out to Hertford and already they are asking about where to go to progress with opening a pub/bar. Perhaps that was the plan all along. Or maybe the view of someone who moves out to Hertford is that the pub/bar line of business is where the money is.

Before we all get too precious about all the pubs and clubs springing up in Hertford, about 20/25 years ago, Hertford was well known in the area for having numerous pubs. The difference was that they were mainly the old style, locals only pubs. Most were McMullens, some were Benskins. In Port Vale alone at one time there were 3 within about 400 yards (2 opposite Mill Mead school), with another just along the road, opposite the church, in Cowbridge. The change now is in the style of pubs and the attraction to those damn out of towners.
Reply ID 4751
Isn't it the dam out of towners that are putting money in to the towns economy. I remember 10 years ago trawling the town for some life Monday to Wednesday evening to no avail. Now the town always has a thriving atmosphere what ever time of the week or time of day. Yes there are some fights, but unfortunately you will get this any where that you mix young people and alcohol. Take away people visiting from other towns and businesses will struggle to survive and we will end up with a sleepy back water again without all of our great restaurants and bars.
Reply ID 4752
I have no problem with bars and pubs. And I am making no assumption about the type of bar A Grove is interested in. I go to plenty myself. It is more that someone new to Hertford (I assume) sees this trade as the most lucrative above other types. That's just a reflection of the town. And I didn't mention 'dam(n) out of towners'. I would be more than happy to have thousands of them brought in by the coach load. A succesful town cannot exist just by and for those who live in it. But you have to consider why they are coming. Walk around the town on a Saturday or Sunday morning and count the piles of vomit. And yes, the amount of money spent by them might outweigh the cost of cleaning their puke but it's everything else that goes with it.
Reply ID 4753
Bit of advice to A Grove. Walk around the town and look at the empty properties and some of the working ones as well. And ask yourself why some failed and some survive. Yesterday every pub in the town centre was busy (don't ask how I know - I do) - apart from one, The Stonehouse. The barge was shut. Most had some fire fighters but there was plenty of Joe Public as well. But The Stonehouse relies on the evening trade. Nothing better than a personal tour around town - in the morning, afternoon and evening. That will tell you exactly what does best when - and what the competition is up to as well. And if you're sober at the end of it all - you might be able to make a decision. On the other hand, my fees are quite reasonable.

For the record, I’m simply a youngish self employed business man looking at his options (I don’t wish to stay doing what I’m doing now for ever). Yes I am new to the area though I’m not sure why that should be an issue one way or another. I wouldn’t imagine everyone on here were actually born and bread and Hertford. Indeed I am sure I can remember Ewooar’s alibi for supporting Arsenal was that he was born near the stadium (though I may be wrong). I worked in bars when I was at university, have frequented them more than I should throughout my life and looking around Hertford I think there is room for one or two more. Its not that I see the bar trade in Hertford as being more lucrative than others its just it is something I know about and might consider getting into if the figures were right. So I will take people’s advice, look around and maybe speak to a few of the people mentioned. As for the type of bar Ewooar, I was thinking maybe one that only sold alocpops (at knockdown prices), was open till 4am, had no bouncers on the door, put on free coaches to and from North London.....oh......and maybe some strippers.....

It was me that asked the Bar type Mr Grove. Free Enterprise is fine by me, be but warned you will have to get it right. Baroosh has the majority of custom in the town due to its location, style, size and the fact that they were the first in the town to do anything like it. No11 is on the same level as Baroosh, but has a slightly older clientele, most of regulars know the owners and have done for some years, this alone will prop up their P&L. The Sportsman "Bollypub" will have to come up with something completely different to the both of these as it location and size will, in my opinion not warrant it being another Baroosh/No11 type place. The Town is and always will be a tough place for bars and restaurants, everyone will tell you that where Lussmans is now has had several owners in the last 10 years most of which have fallen flat on their face. Cafe Pasta only lasted for as long as it did as it was part of the Pizza Express group. Opening a bar in Hertford may look like money for old rope, but you will be up against people that have years experience in the trade along with an existing client base. What you have to appreciate is, if you are opening another "trendy" bar, why should people stop going to Baroosh and start going to yours if its the sametype of bar? People are creatures of habit. If you want to be successful, you will have to look at a different USP. But who am I to say, I only drink in these places and have done for years!
Reply ID 4794
Realistically, your problem will be McMullens. Unless they are on your side, you probably won't get past the planning and lisence application stage. Macs own so much of Hertford and have so much influence that anything that might threaten their pubs or clubs either has to be in existence already or be very fortunate to escape them.
Reply ID 4836
Well, there's only one club left that's both subversive, apolitical and will get under the Macs corporate radar.... The W.I. Anyone for knitting or jam?

Its a Kharzi! and is not a quiet pub. Depending on what side of town you live, pick one of the back street boozers if you want quiet, but atmosphere. Suggestions would be Millstream (bottom of Bengeo) Black Horse (West Street) Railway Tavern (Railway Street) White Horse (Castle Street) Or if you want a beer in town The Old Cross Tavern (St Andrews Street) Back bar of the Salisbury Arms Or start early in Baroosh get your important conversations in early when its quite. Position yourselves accordingly, get drunk and admire the view!

Mr Grove, It sounds like you may value my opinion? From some of your recent quotes, I would hazard a guess that this pub may not be quiet your cup of tea. True I have not been in the place for serveral years, but looking through the windows and the very fact that they have a Karioki evening, I would not venture in there, unless on a major pub crawl. But you also strike me as the type of person that like to form there own opinions. I've only been here less than a month so I know very little. I've been to Baroosh (x3) which I really liked (though I can see from here its not to everyone's taste). Anyway, I'll report back monday...

Where have the youths gone? Hmmm as far as I can make out they're in the usual haunts, Stone House or whatever they call it (regent), Baroosh, Blackbirds and the streets!!!!!! I remember when there were proper bikers and Hells angels in the Woolpack and Blackbirds around late 1970's .. cool.. It was great, never a problem in the town, people too scared when they started up their bikes and speed off.. I was only a young thing.. Can we get them back , they're better than the cops for keeping law and order on the streets!!!

Drama Queen, When we are talking youths we are talking 16 to 21 year olds. As far as I have ever known the average age of the drinker in Baroosh I would say is about 30 years old. As a matter of fact I belive that they have a over 21 policy. Plus I don think theer are many young people that would want/could afford to pay £3.10 for a pint of Stella!

Reply ID 5094
Alot of this hinges on how you define "real ale" and consequently "real ale pub". The only "real ale" pubs in town, as far as I'm concerned, are those that sell a variety of beers from different (often small) breweries, and regularly feature guest ales. They also have beer festivals. The Barge and Ram are simply outlets for their owners product (no disrepect intended).
Reply ID 5096
Agree with the comment about "real ale pubs" selling a range of different guest beers, obviously the Ram is a Mac pub, but I am sure I have seen a chalk board of guest ales in the Bardge and have drunk Adenams and Old Speckled Hen. Does this not make it a real ale pub?

Despite the many pumps Barge not best known for the quality of; lager still main seller (or cellar?). And Tom well known for love of televised rugby. On the other hand one of few pubs that still hosts regular live music for which he does deserve a big pat on the back - possibly on March 17.

I know, its a bit pathetic that someone feels the need to pick up on spooling mistooks! We could all sit here all day picking people up if we so desired.

I was always told that AK doesn't travel well. Tis a damn long way from the brewery to the town centre.

Funny how local people seem to dislike local ales. Hertford people seem to have a distaste for AK, but up north where my other half comes from it is almost a delicacy. Then his local ale Hartleys is hated by the locals but whenever we have it on tap it seems to be popular.[?]

This thread seems to have lost it's way and gone variously off-topic. Would someone like to start a new topic about the merits of McMullens beer?
