I'm not really a big fan of Chinese food - I'm vegetarian and have found the Chinese food I've tried in the past has been too greasy and heavy. Husband, however, is quite partial to it. I am therefore looking for recommendations for good Chinese restaurants in Hertford or the local vicinity. If there are any that are also particularly good for vegetarians, I would be delighted. In my opinion, there are none in Hertford. A good Chinese restaurant seems to be a dying breed.

I agree with Steve, Peking House takes some beating. Their takeaway menu does include a vegetarian set meal so you should be OK. You can see their takeaway menu if you google Peking House. Their address is 12-16 Fore St, Hertford phone 01992 501524

I was going to recommend Restaurant 22 in Ware but it looks like they may have shut down. They were definitely non-greasy, but a bit more expensive than the norm. I generally agree with James that there is nothing outstanding in Hertford. From our recent visits we'd probably give Paddyfields the edge over Peking House, but I'd also be interested to hear any recommendations for a really good Chinese not too far away from Hertford....

No its s**te, in my opinion give China Town a miss. If you want to go to London have a look at this http://www.squaremeal.co.uk/restaurants/london/selection/103/Best_Chinese but if its Hertford the Paddyfields and the Peking House are equally as good as each other.

I agree with Victor about the food quality - if you've ever wondered why chinese dishes look and taste similar amongst most chinese restaurants this is because the dishes are bought ready-made from wholesalers. All the restaurants/take-aways have to do is heat them and serve - hence why the food is invariably ready in 5 minutes. Freshly prepared food calls for a wait. I learned this when surveying a chain of such wholesalers in the 90's. The Wong Kei experience is for the rude waitering, not the haute-cuisine, though a fun experience nevertheless.

Peking house will make any dish beancurd if you ask! I often have sweat and sour beancurd which is nice. And they do something called Crispy "Duck" which is a soya version of crispy duck! Paddyfields do much the same. So even when there isnt many veggie options on the menu often tehy will make something up for you!

If your in London and want a chinese then this is the place to go. No menu. Just tell the waiter what you like and let it happen. They will bring various dishes out for you and just eat until you've had enough. http://www.hunanlondon.com/ As for Hertford, we always use the Paddyfields.

I use china red in ware, they are a restaurant,& takeaways are available, there food is not greasy at all and is always a pleasure to eat never in 5 years have had a problem here, in fact alot my my friends and family now use this chinese.

and they have alot of vegetable dishes to choose from if you are vegetarian, im not sure if they have a website but pop down and get your self a menu !

I feel it is perfectly valid to refer to restaurants outside Hertford if this is done with reference to others in Hertford. So, if there is a feeling that none of the Hertford Chinese restaurants are as good as one in Ware, or even London, then it's a valid comment to say that here. It would not be valid, however, to start a thread just reviewing Chinese restaurants in London. OK?

No, not ok. Where do you draw the line if you allow comments about restaurants outside of Hertford or the immediate local area? Is it Ok to promote a Chinese Restaurant in Beijing? I'm surprised Admin has allowed these threads to continue, particularly as he has removed my thread about Trafalgar Day, which was pertinent to Hertford, albeit it tenously.

Clearly Beijing would be too far. But it's perfectly reasonable for Hertford people to travel to Ware or London. Not everyone will want to or even be able to, but many will. If I wanted a special place for a Chinese meal I would definitely go to London if I felt there was something much better than what I can find in Hertford. I'm not having a go at the Chineses in Hertford here - we have had perfectly good meals at both Peking House and Paddyfields.
