For years I've always thought The Raj to be the best Indian in town, even though we rarely managed to go there. It's now our local/closest Indian and we went there last Thursday. I'm afraid I won't want to return quickly. Every single dish was swimming in oil/ghee. I love ghee, but not when it's pooling on the surface of the dish or lurking at the bottom of the rice bowl. Flavours were good, quantities were right, but the fat let it down. No atmosphere as no music, possibly after the news of Shahenshah's punishment, and not busy on a Thursday night at all. Dil's from now on for me!

we got a takeaway from there on Saturday night. ABSOLUTELY RANK!!!! Every dish had a good cm of oil on top of it and I beg to differ that their 'hot korma' didn't contain any artificial colouring. It was by far the reddest curry I've ever seen. Safe to say, I will never order anything from there again. Yuk! Shahenshah and Tikka Cottage are way,way better

Visited Saturday night with the family and had a great time. Food was excellent as usual, as was the attentive service.

Look forward to seeing more posts about The Raj. The two negative comments made above are worrying. We've been travelling out of Hertford for our curries in recent months because of the rather indifferent comments on this site. You would think that with all the competition around, and the economic climate, that standards would be consistently high.

At the risk of an off-topic post we went to http://www.samoji.co.uk/ in St Albans and found it superior to anything in Hertford. We have also been a few times to the Raj in Epping which is also good. While I agree with Donostia that we'd never agree it is also true that standards change over time.

Had a lovely meal here tonight. They have some new dishes on the menu and had a dish recommended to me which was lovely. Huge portions so took half home. The restaurant was buzzing while we were there between 7 - 9.

Also had a lovely meal there over the weekend, great food and good service. I didn't find any problems with a layer of ghee and neither could any of my table.

Took a friend to the Raj on Saturday and had a very very good curry. Good taste, well presented and reasonable value. The best curry we've had before is in Bedford, but this will save visits to a prize winner in Shefford.

Back to the Raj tonight after a long absence. Not a great experience. A somewhat changed menue from when we were regulars there, and I chose one of the new dishes which was very disappointingly bland despite being advertised as a fairly hot dish. But the portion was huge - certainly could have been enough for two people. My wife's balti tikka marsala was rather too hot for her, but I found it pleasant enough. I think we shall be going back to St Albans in future....

I totally agree Graham, portions are massive starters are very tasty but I am always disappointed by the mains. I have never had a bad meal in the tikka cottage. Best curry around is the Raj in Hoddesdon by the BP garage. Give that on a go as opposed to going to St Albans.

Imho dil's is the best curry house in Hertford. Tasty but not oily. delivers too!

It just goes to show that many of us have different preferences. My wife and I love the Raj (3 times in the last 2 weeks)and having tried all the curry houses in Hertford, we think that the Raj is the best with Ruby's coming second. The rest don't rate as highly in our opinion. Just come back from a 2 week holiday in the north of India and I go regularly through work. The Tarka Dal at the Raj is as good as it gets, as is the lamb Khalian.

went here last friday and it was fantastic. Not overly cheap but by far the best curry I've had in a long time. Really exceptionally good. (even with my kids playing up! but that's another story) - can't recommend highly enough.
