Plane over Bengeo today
What on earth was that really unusual plane that flew over Bengeo just now. It looked like a Vampire, but think it was a twin propeller plane rather thana jet. Had all windows closed so couldn't hear it properly. Also had blinds down so only caught the tail end (and what a nice tail end it had) of it...
It was dark, with orange tips.
Anybody know?

I caught a glimpse of it too, driving home from work - it was flying very low over St Andrews St. Looked like a twin fuselage to me, which could indeed make it a lockheed lightning - very pretty.

Yes, also saw it as it passed over the White Lion in Bengeo St. It was incredibly low, max 500ft and I wondered if it was experiencing problems.

It looks like the plane in your photo. I actually work next to Duxford airfield so I'm used to interesting planes flying over my office all the time, but when working from home it comes as a greater surprise! I certainly doubt the plane was too low, probably just lower than normal (when small planes normally cross Hertford at around the legal maximum height of around 2400 - 2500 ft) as the cloud base was a bit lower on Friday, so he maybe looked and sounded lower than what we're used to.

Sally B, I would normally bow to your aviation knowledge, but can assure you that the aircraft was, as has been stated, exceptionally low and most definately below 1000ft.

If it was G-BZGL as per my earlier picture it is based at Duxford (although owned by a company in Whitstable). Originally built for the German Air Force as a target tug plane in the mid 70's it came to Duxford in 2001 for restoration and started flying again around 3 years ago.

It was very, very low. I'd say around 400 to 500 feet. The people around me were saying that they thought the plane was in trouble.
Clearly, now, it wasn't. [:)]
