Gritting lorries
Does anyone know who mans the gritting lorries, I think they have been doing a wonderful job, it is not their fault they can't do the side roads it would just be too expensive to have sufficient equipment etc for possible use 1 week every 20 years.
It got me wondering though they work 24 hours a day it would seem so presumably they are taken off other jobs so what jobs would gritter drivers be on the other 50 weeks of the year?

my friend works for Enfield Council and for most of the year he deals with the drains but in the winter months he does over-time (and lots of it) to drive the gritting lorries. He has to be on call and works all kinds of odd shifts.

They mainly do other driving jobs such as bin trucks, etc. - some of them are going to need a lorry to bring their wages home at the end of the month!! Good luck to them, I wouldn't fancy being out all night in these conditions.

My brother in-law does gritting, but his main job is road maintenance for Hertfordshire Highways.

Thanks I wondered that........they are worth every penny of the overtime they get paid IMHO I wouldn't want to do it!
