Coles has closed
Just walked down Maidenhead Street and there are signs in Coles' windows saying that this branch is closed and directing you to the other branches. Did we know it was shutting?
Another empty unit on that street... [:(]

So......I was talking to a fellow retailer who said that despite the rumours the shop was not closing.....is this true or is it a temporary closure?

I think its permanent - I walked past last night and the sign said closing with directions to one of their other shops. Maidenhead St. is becoming a bit of a twilight zone - and badly needs some regeneration. Personally I think the Saturday market is bad for business as it detracts from the retail units - in my opinion an alternative site for the market should be looked at.

I suspect that the only successful high street shops will be those offering items that you can't buy on the internet.
Between that and the supermarkets, they don't really stand much chance.

That's a shame. Something really needs to be done with Maidenhead St. Would be nice to see some high st stores taking over the old Mc Donalds/Woolies stores as I'm sure independent stores wouldn't be able to afford the rent.
Lets hope the council is working hard to get people into the vacant shops along there.

Good quality stuff but in the present economic climate I doubt there is a big demand for £150+ shoes and £60 shirts. Sad to see them go but thats the reality. I may have hired an evening suit from them on three occasions in about 10 years but thats about it.

It never seemed to be the same since Mr Smith left. He had a phenomenal memory for names, remembering your name even if you hadn't been in there for months. He was also very good at service.
I bought some stuff in there just after Christmas and the person who served me wasn't very good. She got all sort of basic things wrong -- with the prices they charged you expected to receive some decent service.

This is a shame. It's one of the few shops in Hertford I actually used regularly. Where does one buy good shoes in town now?

I'm not surprised. We had a bad experience in there a few years ago ... subsequently, we nicknamed them A**coles.

If it is, then I am sure they'd get a tad more business if there were some men's bits in there. We used to visit an M & Co in Norfolk and it had men's bits. Matalan usually resembles a giant car-boot sale, so try not to go there for my £4 jeans[:)]
