Malcolm was supposed to be taking over in October last year and the business was going to move to different premises, but I'm not sure what the state of play is at the moment.

Malcolm is looking for new premises either down Mead Lane or in the old Ekins yard opposite the brewery. Closes mid March.

Malcolm hopes to get the new premises up and running as soon as possible but it all depends on rental, so there may well be some downtime, get your stuff now. I expect houses eventually but will probably be a long way off.

Just out of interest my father tells me Harry (jnr) took the business over from his father Harry (snr) and it has been a motor factor as long as he can remeber(my father is 86 in a couple of weeks) Harry snr used to drive round in an old beige Humber .

Malcolm has worked for Harry Shepherd as a loyal employee since a teenager. Harry and his family should do the decent thing and enable him to carry on where he is. Seems all of a sudden the "family" has taken an interest and are erecting obstacles at every turn. Will be a tragedy if it goes....

I have spoken to Malcolm and he has confirmed that he is moving to Warehams Lane and hopes to be trading on 19th April. He is trying to sell most of the products that Shepherds sold but will have to build it up over a period of time. The new place is going to be called "Henry's of Hertford" and he is keeping the Shepherds telephone numbers. He says he hopes the old customers will support him and I for one wish him well.

This Topic brings back memories. My first job after I left school was working at Shepherds (The Colonel)..In them days there was no electronic tills, No barcodes it was all in your head and pen and paper. My maths quickly improved especially working out the V.A.T. in front of a customer and a full shop.

Sadly, Harry passed away on Monday 15th November. His funeral will be held on Wednesday 24th November at 1.30pm at St.Mary's church Hertingfordbury. Family flowers only but donations can, if desired, be made in Harry's memory to "Help for Heroes" or "The Alzheimers Organisation". He will be sadly missed.

Harry's funeral was a sombre "text book" affair. Apparently his death was advertised in last Saturday's Telegraph...not in the Mercury, this week nor last. Doubtless there were many others who would have liked to have attended. If only they knew.
