Hertford Marquee Club
Just wondered what the forum thoughts on The Hertford Marquee Club were?..
i was so happy when it opened, but am surprised to find i don't often spend that much time there... It's a great venue and the guys who run it are great... i think i put this mainly down to the price of the beer, (and sometimes the entrance fee)... it can work out an expensive night if you fancied checking out some random bands, on the hunt for new talent!!
and call me an old fogey but often it is just too damned loud!! my ears will still be ringing the next day, which is never a good sign!!
Earplugs are the future!!

yeah i used to think like that... the louder the better... unfortunately i need my ears, and i'm becoming ever more aware that if i'm somewhere completely silent i can hear a quiet high pitched whine in my right ear!!
research published by RNID shows that three out of four people (73%) who go to clubs or concerts regularly are risking permanent hearing damage...

i must admit i do have tinnitus,self inflicted..back to the marquee its a great place but the door prices to very for some reason sometimes £3,£5 and £10.

Hi,
New to this.
Think the Marquee is great and needs to be kept alive, especially for us older fogies. Worth the money in my book.
Let's get the kid's in there, the only way we are going to keep Music Live. Great Guy's for the Tusnami Gig if anyone was there, all early teens and playing "Smoke on the Water!"
How about negotiating a Teen's type thing on a weekend afternoon maybe?

Despite always wanting a music venue in town, I actually haven't been over there yet.
When are they getting a Bon Jovi tribute band. I'm there! [;)]

fair play Rachel,its a ploy to get people interested in the marquee.Its a good place to go and good to play at.So those that havnt been,try it its a good night out [8D]

Hi ordinary punter here - (ageing muso really).
Just paid my first visit to the Marquee yesterday. The Marquee club is fantastic! Otway was brilliant, the atmosphere was friendly and the dj played some top tunes. Beer prices Ok for a club.
Much better than the Walkern club which I like but has such a narrow remit - I long for someone in Walkern to play something other than a 12-bar padded out with long guitar solos!
As for a Bon Jovi tribute band - each to there own but I think the Castle Hall does enough dodgy tribute bands. Why can't we see more original acts there - ones that are too big for the marquee? I'd love to know who books the bands at Castle Hall - absolutely dire!

Castle Hall aren't interested in [good] taste - they simply need to get as many people through the door as possible, and for some reason, tribute bands are popular. Castle Hall's policy of booking acts of any kind seems to be quite conservative.
Not long ago, Castle Hall was simply a venue for hire. They didn't have a programme of events or anything. EHDC have been unimaginative with their use of the hall, possibly because they didn't have their own seating (although I understand this will change soon).
You only have to look to Broxbourne Civic Hall to see what it could be.

I'm planning to visit the Marquee tomorrow night for the first time to see The Trash. Opening times are described as 8 til late, anybody know how late is late??? Also what sort of time do the bands appear, I need to ensure I have taken on board enough cheaper beer before arrival if this thread is to be believed!!

"Late" is 11:30-midnight (bar closes at the earlier time, music 'til the later time). They have applied for a later license, but again that will mean running the bar until midnight and running the music later.
Beer is £3 a pint for the strong lagers and Guinness, not sure about bitter. Has a pool table though didn't see how much it cost.
Went for the first time last night and was impressed by the place (also enjoyed Otway a lot, too). I'll be going a lot more often in future.

Castle Hall are also constrained by their audience limits. And there are other factors..........the signage is owned by an external organisation (HDOS I believe) so you have to arrange that separately and pay for it. And the bar is also run separately.
Atleast they now have a booking office.
