What a deathtrap! I tried to get off the A10 southbound there and was confronted with streams of traffic on the roundabout speeding by me - there was no way my little-engined car could pull out safely. This roundabout is not safe - next time I will get off at the next stop and double back on myself.

Hi Newgirl The problem I find with this roundabout is that traffic heading west into Ware Road has only one lane to queue before the Tesco junction lights, and often backs right onto the roundabout itself. Surely it would have been better to allow Ware Road traffic to use both lanes east of the roundabout? Also, this roundabout would be MUCH better and more free-flowing without traffic lights. Thanks heavens they're only part-time....

Welcome back Mike - been on holiday? Different roundabout but same problems here The one I was worried about getting killed on is the main one with the A10 interchange by the out-of-town McDonalds/pertol station. If you have avoided this so far - well done and good luck!

Hi Newgirl -- yes, been away several times, though on business (worst luck!) Totally agree with you about the big roundabout. The problem is that many drivers don't move over into the far lane to go right round it, meaning that you can't get out for ages if for eg you are trying to get out of the BP garage. Still, it's better than having the dreaded traffic lights all over it, which only cause queues, in my experience.....

My problem roundabout is where the A414 meets the (A1000?) road to Welwyn, just west of Hertford. If you're driving east, you have to rejoin the 414 via a split exit, divided by a traffic island. (Ie Welwyn traffic can drive straight round to the left without stopping at the roundabout). But it means no-one coming along the 414 knows which lane to go round the roundabout in, and there can be a tricky situation! The roundabout should really have marked lanes for straight on and turning, then we'd be OK,..... Still, it's better than London, where every roundabout has umpteen traffic lights, 24hrs a day.........

The reason why roundabouts have traffic lights is because when you have a strong flow of traffic from one or two particular entrances, it becomes very difficult for traffic from the other entrances to get onto the junction. That they back-up the main road is a by-product, but they should relieve the problems on other roads. This should mean that there's a better balance on the approach roads, even if one set of roads seem worse off. A lot of drivers who tend to do the same routes - especially at the busy times when the problems occur, may not see the problems that are supposed to be alleviated by the lights, and may only see the affect on their particular route(s). The best systems would be to remove the main roads from the roundabouts and use slip-roads, but traffic lights are a cheaper option, and have less of an impact than fly-overs and under-passes. Also, as you can see at other junctions where you get a lot of traffic entering or exiting the main road, you still get the same problem. With the A414, it needs to be seen if most of the traffic is through-traffic or traffic coming to the town centre. I suspect it's through-traffic, so would guess that taking the A414 from the roundabouts would solve most of the problems associated with that. The toucan crossing wouldn't be needed either as the road would either go over or under the pedestrian routes. Of course, this wouldn't affect the roundabout between the A414 & A10, but slip-roads between them would.

Yay - I see in the paper that "they" are considering putting traffic lights on "Rush Green" roundabout (that's the one with the McDonalds on it near the A10). There have been 46 accidents in 3 years there - I'm surprised that there weren't more. Now - if only they can stop the cars from hurtling down the hill towards the Bluecoats roundabout.......
