Travelling to Welwyn Garden City in peak time
My office is thinking of relocating to WGC and I have realised that I have never made that journey in peak time so I'm not sure if I will encounter traffic. The office location will be town centre and I was thinking that I could use the back road that goes out past Sele Farm. If anyone uses this route would you let me know if there are any regular hold ups along the way? Any guesses at how long it would take me from Hertford East area would be useful too.

Cycle the Cole Green Way, cheaper, healthier, more relaxing. Maybe 40 minutes factoring 10 mins to Cole Green Way, 20 minutes along CGW and 10 minutes at the other end.

Takes about 30 minutes at the most from the east side of town. Hold ups are A414 (obviously), North Road near the station occasionally, Sele school if the lollipop man is out, and the approach to the Mundells roundabout. If you can get on the A414 before 8am then you can avoid all of the above and it'll take you about 15 mins. Or, get on your bike and it'll take about 30 mins whatever time of day it is.

@Jackanapes. Fair enough. 40 mins seems about right for CGW. I was thinking of road route along Old Coach Road. BTW, CGW has been spruced up recently and some of the more muddy sections have been resurfaced and the hedges cut back alonog most of the route. No excuse not to use it now.

If you are thinking of cycling everyday you would be advised to invest in some good tyres.
Dependant on your steed of choice those tyres will either be continental gatorskins, or schwalbe marathon plus.

I make tis jorney each day using the 414 and then the B195, usua;;y takes about 20 minutes, 15 on a good day. The usual hold ups along the 414 are not too bad

I used to make this journey daily from the West side of town to an office off the Mundells roundabout and it took no more than 15 minutes using the B1000.
It does depend upon the time you make the journey though and from which side of Hertford you are travelling from and to.
When I cycled it took about 25 minutes, again using the B1000.

I use the B1000 rather than the A414 and have no problems at all. At peak time you'll do all the usual queueing that you already know about in Hertford, and then in Welwyn you'll queue briefly on the approach to the Mundells one-way (take the second turn, just past Tewinbury Farm, rather than the first one to Panshanger, as it's easier to get on the Mundells from there), then again to the traffic lights at the Bessemer Road/Bridge Road crossroads, although neither queue will add that much to your journey.
I cycle as much as I can, the journey takes me about 25 minutes. My choice of steed is a MTB with road tyres - B1000 far too gravelly for knobbly tyres. Be warned, though - the B1000 is pitch black so excellent lights and a very bright jacket are essential. Oh, and the hill from Hertford North up to Sele School is an absolute killer first thing in the morning [B)]

Thanks for your advice everyone. Unfortunately cycling not an option as I frequently need to use the car during the day for longer jaunts but I quite like the thought of it on a nice summer morning [8D]

And keep an eye open for the speed camera that is sometimes outside Sele School.
