Street Names
I always find it a shame that new developments take on bland anonymous street names, rather than having some connection with the locality.
I'd rather live in Wisdom Way than Stoat Close! ;-)

Wisdom Drive is, of course, named after the famous Addis toothbrushes as it is built on the site of the old factory.
There seems to be a lot of building going on at the moment - all in odd little corners. I am just waiting to see how big the development next to Sovereign House turns out to be. Although there are already some monstrous blocks on that side of the road. This one is supposed to be luxurious executive flats with underground car parking. Lets hope they also get a tunnel under the A414 so that they don't have to negotiate the dual carriageway after enjoying Hertford's nightlife!

Some of the old street names are quite funny. For instance, I'm sure living in Thieves Lane makes a good talking point. Old Thieves Lane must be even better
Imagine having to spell Bullocks Lane ever so carefully over the phone - (note the predictable defacing of the sign at the bottom of the hill).
What about living in a Hags Dell?

A propos 'old thieves lane' ---- a delightful observation by our predecessors on contemporary goings-on:-
Maybe we should try to reflect our modern age in a similar vein?
What about: Juvenile Delinquents' Way?
Joyrider Drive?
Shoot-up Alley?
If they get the go-ahead for all these high-density apartments, perhaps these would turn out to be all-too appropriate....

At least the new development opposite the bus station, next to the Friends Meeting House in Railway Street, recognises its' history.
In the 19th century it was the site of Providence Yard and the new development has been named Providence Place.

There was actually quite a lot in a recent Mercury about the Newland family who farmed the land just off Ware Road before the Addis factory was built on it (I hope I am remembering this right). Hence the "main" street on the Barratt development is called Newland Gardens. A relative of the Newland family was consulted about the naming of the road and was said to be pleased with the idea.
Maybe Barratt aren't so bad after all? There are probably reasons why all of the developments have their particular names its but not immediately obvious.
